Imported Model and choosing part of a material

Hi all

I’m not sure how to explain this but I’m looking to reduce draw calls in my game and i have a model of a character (imported from Blender) which I’ve re-used and then made different looks using the exact same shape. My question is am i able to use 1 model and then pick one section of the material/texture in Unity?

I ask as i have 15 materials and 1 model (character) at the moment, so I have 16 draw calls in total. If i can choose a material like you do for atlases then i could get this down to 2 draw calls (batches).

Thanks and any advice would be great!

Nick

You can bake those 15 materials textures into 1 big atlas within 3D softwares.
Or do it manually by offsetting those 15 UV into atlas and combining textures in 2D softwares.

ok so if i have them baked, then after importing into Unity can i then setup a atlas to then choose one of the materials?

After combining it already become 1 big texture atlas and just apply it to 1 material.

OK. I think I’m not grasping the texture atlasing. I have looked around and I can see that if I combine my textures and map my object. Then I can use the texture offset in unity to switch between them. I then realised that if I duplicated the game object and set different offsets that it changes all other offsets as they share the same material.

I guess I can’t do what I’m after. I know I have to import 4 models with different mapped coordinates. I don’t want four objects mapped to one texture. As this means 5 draw calls in total and I only want 2 draw calls.

I have the exact same object as it’s the same character for my game just with a different look and feel.

Oh well…

I used this a long time ago and it worked - https://www.codeandweb.com/texturepacker

I’m not sure if it simply uses the material offset value, so possibly it could allow for unique textures with the same material.
