I have been able to import terrain meshes created in Max Maya just fine.
My question is: Is it possible to use the Unity terrain editing tools to do things like smooth edit and \ or paint ground textures and objects on it like the native terrains created within Unity?
Thanks, Illya
No, but you can use this script to convert a mesh to a terrain.

You can also generate a height map within maya or max from a terrain, and use that for the unity terrain.
Eric - thanks and the script looks sweet. I believe I am following the instructions to make sure the basic mesh is selected but I get the “make sure the terrain exists” message. I have attached a terrain that I am trying to convert if you have time to look at it as a test case.

Thanks and that could be a plan “B”. The terrains that I want to use have roads, sidewalks, etc. cut into them with perfectly aligned verticies. I hope to keep all this geometry intact… but being able to use the nice Unity terrain tools on top of this would be just too good
