Importing assets from max2009 into unity2.5 windows version

hi there… im new here
im looking into the trial version of unity 2.5 on windows.
in the “whats new”-section it says that it is possible to just drag and drop max files into unity.
however… everytime when i save a max-scene into the asset-folder unity crashes!

can anyone help me on this problem?
i can export form max as fbx manually and then put it into the asset folder which works fine, but i would like to skip this step and just dragdrop the max file.

im using max design 2009 btw.

cheers

Sounds like your Max then prevents the export.
Unity calls the max fbx export silently behind the curtains to get an FBX, if that goes boom, then unity might go boom as well.

yeah something is going wrong… :frowning:
i can see in the taskbar that when i save to the assets folder and then switch to unity a new max-scene is opened (probably the fbx-export).

but like is said before, when i manually export the fbx i can load it into unity.
and i have the latest fbx-exporter installed (2009.3)

is it maybe a 64bit-issue?

anyone else haveing this problem?

ok… ive tried it with the 32bit version of max 2009… still no luck.

i can’t believe i’m the only one with this problem.
i mean this is one of the new features of 2.5… just drag and drop the max files into unity.
is everybody still doing the fbx export manually?

ill be very thankful if anybody could give me a hint into the right direction

@Sinnlos you are not only one got this issue. I read about drag and drop .max file in Unity ver 2.5. But there is not anything appear when I drag and drop .max file to Project Tab.

Iam using Mac Unity and Pro 2.5 Version.

same problem here: fbx works fine, but no *.max files
(Vista 64bit, 3dsmax 2009 32/64 bit)

Update: Did reinstall of 3dsmax 64, updated to newest hotfix and fbx exporters. Still crashes

Any solutions?

Very strange indeed! Works like a charm on my vista 64bit os with max 2009 64bit. Have you tried with a clean install of 3ds max? Maybe you have some plugins that mess up things?

thanks abe…

i was thinking that im the only one, who is too stupid to get this working.
your answer gives a lil’ bit of self esteem back to me, he he he.

i’ll just use the fbx-export then.

edit:
@broken poly:
hmm i got no other plugins installed except the latest fbx… what version of unity do you have? maybe its an trial-issue

Any users who are having problem with importing a 3dsMax file, please go to Help->Report a Problem in Unity and attach your MAX file.

Hey
Are you testing with standart materials.
Vray mat and others can be bad for Unity

its not the material… i tested with standard material and without assigning any material, always the same problem.
i switched the render from vray to scanline but this doesnt help either.

however, i reported the problem like aebrahimi said.

cheers and thanks for all your tips.

Pretty much the same here.

Unity will import the file and show it as a ‘Default Asset’ and not a mesh, and I can’t do anything with it.

The fbx works fine.

I’ve submitted a help request.

Here’s one more thing to try. Check what program is associated with .max files. We use this association to decide what program to launch to convert the files. If you have multiple versions of 3dsMax installed, then you will want to make sure you are using the latest version for conversion.

that did the trick for me, thx

Did the author of this thread resolve the issue. I’m having the same problem and changing the file association doesn’t help. I’m using FBX 2006.11

Please help.

make sure that the association actually changed too

I kept trying to change it, but the max version I was trying for had a generic exe icon in explorer and never would change

I finally ended up uninstalling all 3 versions and installing the one I will mostly work from. It still is lacking the correct max icon, but it is associated.

I’m worried now about re-installing the other versions of max (which I need for various plugins [VRay, Deep Exploration, etc])

I would like to see us able to manually point Unity to the version of max we want it to open files with

sorry for replying so late…
yep, im pretty sure that assigning the right max-version will do the trick… unfortunatly i have the same problem like GameLvr.
i keep assigning .max-files to the max 2009 version, but it doesn’t work.
i can’t uninstall my old max7 version because i’m still working on projects there.

what im doing now, is to export the fbx manually, since there is no difference.

that would be handy indeed.
because there is one thing annoying me. i cant save the max files in the assets folder, because it will crash anytime i try to open unity… im saving my max files into the project folder and the fbx into the assets folder, which makes it a lil’ bit chaotic.

Something I had to do with RC 1 of Windows 7…
In your installation folder for Max, find the executable and set it to run as administrator. Unity would simply freeze up until I did this.
Max won’t run properly on my machine unless I do this, so it makes sense that unity can’t launch it either.

in vista or in Windows 7 Make sure you are run the unity AS ADMINISTRATOR mode

just right click and select run as administrator .

I read somewhere that the latest FBX exporter is not suitable for an older version of Max ,I cannot remember where and I cannot test this theory coz im poor lol .But as I said Im 99% sure I read this was the issue and was fixable using the correct fbx exporter for the version of Max your using .I read lots of posts and it all stays in your head I guess lol .Hope this helps
