Importing Assets is SLOW

Importing assets has gotten extremely slow for me. If I make a change to one texture and save it, when I switch back to Unity it takes anywhere from 3-6 minutes for that texture to reimport. Same if I apply a change to a texture’s import settings. If I change multiple texture settings, it can take 8-10 minutes for Unity to finish. Same if I change a model, it takes several minutes to reimport. During this time, I can do nothing in Unity, and everything else is slowed to a crawl, so I mostly just wait. According to Activity Monitor, PVRTexTool is using 250-350+ percent of CPU time!

FWIW, I’m running on a Mac Pro (early 2008), Mac OS 10.10.3, with 8 GB of memory, and Unity 5.0.1f1.

Is this normal for Unity now? It used to be I dreaded having to bake a light map because of the down time, now it’s having to make a change in a texture.

Turn off “compress assets on import” in the preferences.

Good to know.
Would be useful to enable users to change that or at least show that information to users in the “hold on” progress bar while importing.

Kind of like “Pro tip:” section while loading in a lot of modern games.
