Importing from Maya 8

Has anyone had any experience importing .mb and .ma files into Unity on an (Intel) system with Maya 8 installed?

Unity keeps warning me that Maya could not convert the files to fbx and leaves me with a useless .mb asset in my heirarchy.

When I manually export, I end up with assets that did not properly import the mesh (i.e. no mesh shows up when I drag the asset into the scene view).

I have dl’ed and installed the latest Autodesk fbx plugins.

Any advice?

The native Maya importer doesn’t work with Maya 8 yet. We are working on it.

If you want to accelerate the process:
Hit reimport on the .mb file, when the error shows up run Report Bug.app.
(This gives us all the log files showing what went wrong in the import process)

Curses!

I knew I should’ve stayed with Maya 7.

Time to downgrade.

I will certainly report the issues now. (Wasn’t sure if it was my fault or not).

For the time being, if fbx plugins work for you, you can manually export to fbx from Maya and use that in Unity.

also, you don’t have to downgrade, you can run maya 7 and may 8 on the same license, maya licenses are backwards compatible. So just have both installed at once and only work in 7 until unity supports 8.

Actually the problem was resolved.

The folks at OTEE are, as always, right on the ball. They just sent me a tweaked version of the maya importer scripts in Unity, and now everything works fine.

Thanks Joachim!

This same error just started cropping up for me. Not sure why, as the file i was using used to work fine.

It seems the file imports when changes are saved, but it still gives this error…

Are you sure you are running Unity 1.5.1?

If yes, use Report Bug.app immediately after the import process. This gives us the console log and some more details what exactly is failing.

Yeah running 1.5.1. Sending via Report Bug.app… now! (though not sure if it sent you any log, as i did not attach any file)

It does that automatically.

Ahh nice. You should have it now. Hope it helps!
