Importing maya files into Unity

Hey everyone!

I’ve never worked with Unity before, but I’m a modeler/animator that frequently uses Maya. My client has asked me to make modifications to an animated .FBX file so he can use it in Unity. I made the modifications in Maya 2009. When I export the file out of Maya as a .FBX and send it to my client, he says it crashes Unity. We’ve been trying to work around this problem by just using the .MB file, but there are still issues opening the file because of version incompatibility (he’s using Maya 8.0).

Now, I’ve tried sending him a Maya Ascii file where I went in and manually changed the version type with a text editor to version 8.0, but he still can’t open it. I even found some kind of utility out there that will change your .MB files to version 8.0, and he says that won’t work, either.

I’m at a loss! I’ve invested a lot of time into this project and I’m not sure what to do next, so I would appreciate any help or feedback I could possibly get. The file is a low-poly animated biped mesh (no environment or lighting or anything else) and he needs Maya 8.0 to read it.

Thanks!

Try exporting the file to FBX using the 2006.11 version.

I’m not sure what you mean by the 2006.11 version… Is that a setting in Unity? Or a plugin version?

It’s the Maya FBX plug-in version that is used to export the FBX file. This can be changed at the bottom of the FBX Export dialog box.

Hey Team Unity,
Congrats on the launch of v2.5!
I was curious if there was a particular Maya FBX plugin version you recommend for use with Maya 2009 and Unity 2.5 (on Mac and PC). I don’t see anything about this since the update was released.

Many thanks,
RW
