Importing non-skinned animations from 3ds max

Right- my problem is this- if I import skinned characters everything is fine, however if I import low poly characters where body parts are separate (non skinned) and linked to the skeleton parts then when I import (FBX) everything gets really screwed up. is this a limitation of unity or is there a workaround?

never mind problem solved- had to do with the fbx export settings
