Improving Asset Import Performance

I work on multiple projects, and often update projects from co-workers, etc.

However I found a big bottle-neck is when Unity has to import assets, it can take quite a while to do what ever it needs to do. Same for changing platform.

I know that Unity has its asset management and build systems for this, however I simply want to know what the best local setup would be, in terms of hardware, and what system settings I could tweak.

I have an okay system (HyperX3 SSD, 16Gb 2800 DDR4, 6x core i7 3.3Ghz, decent X99 motherboard, fresh install of Win 8.1, etc).

When I monitor system hardware, there’s no definite maxing out on anything, CPU sits around 40%, SSD sits around 10%. When saw this, it begged the question; what am I missing?

I am prepared to upgrade my system, but would like tips on what I should focus on; more CPU juice? RAID up a few SSDs? Oh, and wasn’t sure if GPU is even a factor for importing? …

I’d be interested if anybody has a good idea about this. I’ll be moving the project over on an SSD and getting a proper processor, but if there’s anything else that would help, I’d like to know.

Our main bottleneck is model importing. Since a reimport of the model happens every time you change any animation settings, at 2 minute import for a character with a bunch of animations adds up fast, and discourages tweaking.
