Just thought I’d make a quick post of something I’ve learnt over the last few days.
I’m not a great programmer or a great unity developer but I’ve been trying to answer as many questions in the Unity forums as best I can over the past few days and I’ve realised that it has actually improved my knowledge of Unity.
I think this has come about because I have to double check my answers before I post and think about problems from other peoples perspectives…
Yes, I often check my code to confirm an answer before posting, but sometimes I need to check a source on the internet, and that can lead to more information I didn’t know about.
I saw a lecture not long ago about how teaching others actually makes the teacher learn more too. They had two groups of kids that they performed an experiment on. Both groups were told to study a particular subject for a certain length of time. One group was told before hand that they were going to teach other classmates what they had learned, and the other group was not. I don’t recall the exact numbers, but when tested, the group that was told they were going to teach what they learned retained more information and scored much higher when tested. I believe the theory was that we tend to take teaching others quite seriously, and so we try harder to make sure the information we are passing along is correct.
So yes, helping others learn should also help you learn.
