Hello! I would like to see unity getting a bit more performant, i know is a complex game engine, but it kinda requires a good device, whats a problem for some dudes like me. I have 2 computers, one broken (a minute of silence pls :() and other is a bit slow. Unity simply dont runs in the slower one without crashing everything. I already tried everything, tried 4 editors (2023, it get an error and stop making project, 2022, it crashes, 2019, it also crashes, and 2020, it slow down my computer till it get unable to slow down more), tried increase performance from all my pc, and nothing works. I gave up for trying to wait hours for my computer to breathe, i even stoped a bit from game development till i fix my other one (which have a lot of up to date drivers).
I used monitoring tools, analyzed all my pc, and i found that while my computer is slow, unity alone can crash it (i got 0 mb of ram memory lol ). In other hand, my pc can open easily other softwares like blender, gimp, vs code, and almost everything i use for a normal game development cycle - except the most important, unity.
I know unity would be heavier due to all its features, but it kinda requires a strong computer, and weaker ones barely open it without crash. Unity could be a bit more performant, for getting simpler pcs. I know as my pc is indeed slow, i dont expect too much, but i would love to at least open it.
I wouldn’t expect much though. Unity is a tool for professionals who can afford at least a minimum amount of hardware. Everyone else is essentially running it at their own risk, and in fact it runs on most mediocre hardware. Even on my mid-2014 MacBook Pro with 16 GB and i7 it still runs okay-ish - slow but everything works although with the IDE and browser open I only got 2-3 GB of free RAM left and that’s with a simple sample project with few assets in it.
Then there is hardware which in itself is problematic. If you only have 8 GB of RAM it’s just not enough for game development. If you have an integrated GPU the likes of which were made to support all-in-one office computers, it will not be fast enough. On top, drivers for these GPUs are often buggy and incomplete because gaming and game dev isn’t their primary use case but Office applications.
Yeah, no chance you will be getting any work done on this machine.
I assume it’s the i3-5005U. You can nicely compare CPU/GPUs via Passmark. Yours ranks just over 2,000 which is roughly 10 times slower than a moderately fast and modern CPU.
