So during development of a game, I have contacted a few folk in the job seeking section who seem interested in doing the job (added on skype, given the pricing etc) and then after a few days they just poof disappear or not willing to discuss further into the details.
Is this a normal thing or am I doing something wrong
It happens a lot, especially on projects that are revenue shared and don’t offer upfront payment. If you’re doing some type of project that doesn’t provide a monetary compensation upfront, then you’ll have to expect this from nearly anybody you recruit.
What sort of pricing are you offering? If your expectations are so far out as to be ridiculous then you may scare off potential workers. Post details of your offer here, sans personal details, and we can look over it for obvious issues.
The way we are doing things at the moment is we hire free lancers who offer their service and how much they charge etc, if they are suitable then we offer them a place for a longer time of work and actually sit with us on the game. We give them our spec on what we require but (now this is the hard bit due to trust issues perhaps or insurance on that we dont get scammed for money) we actually wait for them to build the prototype before we hand over the wages.
I do understand from both perspectives that perhaps they may want the money upfront incase they too, have wasted time on unpaid work but double edged sword here. Would the fault be on our end in this case you think?
I mean the spec we give them at the very beginning is brief just to see if they are willing/interested but before we actually even get to the stage of sitting them down to give them more precise details, they are gone.
Your best bet would be to use actual contracts in this case I’d imagine. Freelancers want paid upfront, and for a good reason; but at the same time, you have to protect yourself from losing money. The only thing that I have experience with that’s similar to your situation is from when I purchased a professional web design. The developer billed me 50% upfront, and then the remaining 50% once the project was completed and I was satisfied. Hopefully someone who’s hired freelancer game developers will be able to chime in further on the safest methods they’ve found.
A lot of inexperienced people will try to set up teams for their games (usually its an MMO of some sort), but have no idea what they are doing. Sadly, yes this is very common. Happened to me a few times, and I dont even work in teams (I was convinced to help a bit on the side, turned out I was the only member of the team who could do anything, but not the worry, they were the ‘idea guys’)
