Inmates in Space playable alpha

Hi,

Here’s the first playable version of my prison escape game I’ve been working on for past two months:

Features:

  • Players objective is to help other inmates to escape
  • Player can issue commands to inmates (I’m thinking follow, wait and attack at the moment)
  • One shot kills. Player has to sneak behind guards to take them out. Player has to protect other inmates from getting killed by issuing commands to them.
  • Lemmings twist: There’s huge amount of inmates to be saved. They start to follow you once you open their cell door. Prison is filled with nasty security systems and deadly guards. Everyone will not make it!
  • Player get score based on how many inmates they’re able to save.

You can play the latest build at: http://inmatesinspace.blogspot.com

Pretty cool! Although after I got the green keycard I let all the inmates out of their cells then got blocked in by them and couldn’t move :frowning: Maybe they should be pushable or have a sense of personal space or something.

seems as though I killed the first guard in the first doorway with the first sword (weird death effect? red spinny square?), then where he had died, I could not pass by, and was stuck in the first room. Perhaps his collider remained blocking my path?

Thanks, this should be fixed now.

Yes that’s very annoying. I’m trying to find a solution to fix it. I’m using A-star pathfinding algorithm for guards and inmates and haven’t yet figured out how make them pushable or avoid from coming too close to player.

There´s a new build at http://inmatesinspace.blogspot.com that has:

  • New player model with simple animations
  • New controls (WASD/Arrow keys + space. Mouse is no longer needed)
  • Combat adjustments (one shot kills - sneak behind guards to take them out)
  • New sounds
  • Bug fixes

just played for a bit, pretty cool idea. Although i found the main character’s speed is rather slow… sometimes backtracking and just general walking seems a bit tedious. But that’s just my opinion, so i would love to see where this is going. Awesome job!

This is cool! But I couldn’t figure out what to do after I killed the first robot.

After playing the game with new controls for some time I agree. It needs to be slightly faster so you can catch up guards but not too fast so you can’t out run them too easily once they spot you. Thanks for feedback.

It might be a bit confusing at the moment. Here’s what you have to do (spoilers ahead  )

  1. Pick up mop in the shower
  2. Beat the first guard with mop
  3. Pick up red keycard from guards corpse
  4. Open red door
  5. Beat second guard with mop
  6. Pick up laser blaster from guards corpse
  7. Follow corridor to left
  8. Kill third guard with laser blaster
  9. Pick up green keycard
  10. Open all inmate cell doors with green card
  11. Escort all 30 inmates safely to a corridor with red blinking lights
  12. You have completed the demo level!

Here’s a new video from my latest build:

New features:

  • Tactical map (toggle with “m”)
  • Commands for inmates: follow me and stop here (toggle with “f”)

Looks nice. You might consider trying a smaller simplified version of the tactical map and docking it in one of the corners like they did in Metal Gear Solid.

Ok tried the new build, I like it much much better! I played through the whole thing I think, and after collecting lots of inmates I decided the only sensible thing to do was lead them into certain doom somewhere…

so I found a hole into space:

and then they didn’t die! bummer, but thats ok - make sure a future build allows me to more humorously do away with them lol

I like the new controls, way easier than before, but maybe for diablo’ish feel that other mouse control would be cool… anyway since I couldnt take em out with the hole into space, I just did it the old fashioned way, lasers a blasting into the group of them floating in space

Is it supposed to be all blocky?

Interesting game, looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Neat game. This weird little thing happened though when I rescued all (most) of the prisoners and escorted them out. One guard came out of no where so I (1st bug) shot through the wall from the outside and killed him. Then this other guard appeared and I can continually kill him and his ragdoll will spawn each time I do. He was stuck in the wall and I don’t remember him even being there when I was escorting the prisoners out.

I liked it; I got a bit confused at first - but is got a fun- slightly scary feel to it. Very nice work.
