Insane looking Crysis fantasy map by MadMaximus @crymod.com

Just insane. :stuck_out_tongue:

Unbelievable that Crysis is 2,5 years old and unbelievable that someone can create such insane looking graphics by themselves. Almost looks better than the Lord of the Rings movies in my opinion. :slight_smile:

No doubt the best graphics I’ve ever seen in any game, map, mod or anything ever.

Detailed but ugly…

Personal taste and all but if you have any knowledge and appreciation for the craftmanship of realtime 3D surely you could give this something more than ā€œdetailed but uglyā€¦ā€. I’m kinda offended on the artist behalf.

Great modelling, texturing, composition and lighting . Seen these before and it is outstanding work no question about it.

hahaha! it’s not ugly at all… it’s freaking beautiful! I think the giant skull might be a bit too much though :-0

i’m going to do a replica of this in minecraft!

Good luck with that

As we say here in Spain, ā€œon tastes there is nothing writtenā€, but I find it very ugly too. IMHO it is just pure accumulation, ā€œhorror vacuiā€. There are lots of ridiculous nonsense architectural details everywhere, lots of things out of scale, groups of the same buildings one over each other… in many zones it looks more like a (bad) photographic assembly than 3D. I would recommend the artist to study a little bit of architecture if he wantĀ“s to build something convincing.

Ummm… I would even bet that there are a lot of things faked there. The more I look at it, the less it looks true 3d for me…

Every individual element in that scene is quite well-modelled. Each component is decently designed, well-textured and seems to have a reasonable poly count. The scenes themselves, though, are a complete mess. Very few of the images have anything close to a focal point, and mostly amount to visual noise. Even ignoring the camera positions chosen for the screen shots, I think that walking around that scene would be hard on the head.

This is not to say it didn’t take a lot of work, or that there isn’t some very good modelling going on there. But it’s not well designed.

@Filto
Nope, from my point of view it’s ugly. Just like all those fantasy landscape pictures some people get fond of in a certain part of their lifetime.

It has no style i can appreciate as well. A Klee picture for instance is quite simple compared to something like this but he just knows how to deal with colours, lightning and shapes. It’s a question of how much you can appreciate abstraction as well. So, sorry, still ugly.

@Taumel

If you regard this as an artpiece sure. I wouldn’t hang these on my walls (not a klee picture either though) I simply regard these as screenshots from a level that a guy created for his portfolio. I’ve seen better environments both craftmanshipwise and that is more esthetically pleasing to me sure. As a one man job it is quite a feat though so I thought he deserved abit more than ā€œdetalied but uglyā€¦ā€ thats all. But then again crytek hired him so I guess thats appreciation enough :wink:

I better be careful what I post in the showcase forum from now on. Tough people to please in here :smile:

Just throwing details at the audience doesn’t mean anything but hey there are a large number of games around which are doing pretty well with rather ugly styles (Oblivion, Fallout 3, Crysis, …) and many people even consider them looking good, so, you’re excused. :O)

Are you serious? I found the open world and visual experience of Crysis to be mind-boggling and unlike anything I’ve seen in a game before or since. I mean, it had to be. The storyline was ho-hum, there were only a few types of enemies, and they kept hurling the same insults at you over and over. :wink:

The technology of Crytek’s engine is fantastic but not the art/design of Crysis.

As for 3D, i’m more into the art of games like Rage, Bioshock, Doom III,
Torchlight, Team Fortress 2, Diablo III, …

Ahh, those meet the … trailers were awesome!

:

Hahaha thank you taumel. And I’m glad you have a personal preference. Most people do :slight_smile: If you work with 3d i’m sure you know that ā€œthrowingā€ those details at the audience isn’t as easy as it sounds though. And since most of us don’t get to decide the style or subject matter but have to follow the art director or product owner I’m sure glad that there are people who can judge skill beyond their own personal preference.

but it is nice to know that if you get to art direct a big game we won’t see another Crysis, I’m not overly fond of the tropical paradise look either so I will promise you the same :wink:

Yeah being an old Crymod junkie I can tell you we get the odd amazing detail stuff. But I have to admit, despite the overwhelming amount of architecture, the scene does seem out of place.

Yeah, agree, insane looking one! And beautiful :slight_smile:

Ahh, not impressing me much!

Taumel have you bothered to look at all the shots? it’s clearly a mile beyond any game I’ve ever seen today. They look like pre-renders and have stunning use of colour. I recommend you view them at full size. I do not think you have any sense of taste… simply outstanding visuals.

This fellow is probably hired by now.

@Filto
You can say that you like green more than red but as aspects like colours and lightning also follow certain rules, it’s not only about personal preferences.

One cannot argue matters of taste because some people simply have better taste than others :slight_smile: . I appreciate the long hours that went to produce this, but the details are overwhelming and give me a headache. Still, it does stand out from the others, doesn’t it?

I admit, like Taumel, that this work is technically incredible. Artistically though, it’s interesting (choice to place some ruins in hidden places, color placements in foliage, some texture works), but overall it can feel like elements were modeled with no real theme and placed randomly, instead of thinking about what architecture/texture combination the scene would need at a given time.

It’s a technical artpiece, like the neverending superfast guitar solos in those 80’s metal songs : it’s technically uncriticizable, but some people can feel ā€œuntouchedā€ by its essence.

i.e Dream Theater’s work :stuck_out_tongue:

(but yeah, a work bringing us to this point of debate obviously deserves some respect)
