Hello,
we would like to ask unity installer team to make checksum test on already downloaded files and if all ok don’t download that part of unity yet again. It is pretty handy especially when you just testing new betas with just minimum installation and later you decide to go full installation or adding new platforms. Or if anything fails during the downloading phase and lets say I already have downloaded 3 parts of unity that are healthy. Now if I try to install it again then unity forces me to redownload already healthy downloaded parts. I know it is a bit work. But you have that check sum right? So just check the directory for already downloaded files and don’t download them yet again. Does it make sense?
Also I noticed on OSX when I install unity on external hardrive and then at the end from installer I press “Run”, actually nothing happens.
Unity is not opened. It is small bug but “God is in details” isn’t it?
Thank you, Marek.

Hi Marek,
With the current way of deployment it is not possible to just update specific parts of Unity by implementing checksums. In fact, the download assistants already do implement checksums, and don’t re-download the already downloaded files if you select a custom download location (otherwise the files get deleted after use). However, this doesn’t apply to updates, since all files in a new version are new. The devs will look into the possibility of delta updates once package manager is more advanced.
Could you please file a bug report for this issue?
Hi Leon, I didn’t mean in between updates. For example yesterday I started to download full ( all packages ) unity. But in the middle I had to cancel since the installer was getting slower and slower when downloading. So I canceled but I had already 4 package downloaded. Later that day I started the installer again and sure enough all four packages were downloaded again even if they existed in that specific path from my previous try.

Sounds like a bug. Could you submit a report for this issue as well please?
I have had the same thing for a while now, and assumed this is how it is meant to work. If not I really suggest you write a post getting feedback on how prevalent this is, because I can tell you right now that on the 20+ computers at work that have multiple versions of unity and backup installers for reinstalling, every single one will always redownload everything in its entirety, wasting a vast portion of development time for the day.
It might be that this is very common and you guys just arent aware!
The downloader is not supposed to re-download components if you selected a custom download path and if they already exist in that location. Please go ahead and submit a bug report if this is not the case for you. Without a bug report the issue is unlikely to enter our system and won’t get picked up by the devs.
