Where is this location? It’s not my temp directory of course.
And please default it to the custom option in future installers. Stop chewing up people’s HD’s.

If it’s temporary then that means Unity files will be removed from that location after installation. Hence the name “temporary”
Well the HD space remaining says otherwise.
Please, don’t reply unless you know the location.
I have freedom of replying on forums. Just like you have freedom making this thread on forums.
Please don’t make threads unless you have googled the solution.
It might not happen immediately. Based on the location it seems to be left up to the OS to clean them up along with its usual cached internet files, which seems reasonable enough. You could report this as a bug if it really concerns you, but I suspect it may be following some standard (as the data is indeed made up of “temporary internet files”).
Then continue to give out false info and waste everyone’s time. Fine by me.
I’ve reported this as a bug.
If you’re on Windows there is a “Disk Cleanup” button in the properties for the drive. That might remove it on Windows, but I wouldn’t know because I never forget to manually specify where the files are sent. I don’t know about other OSes.
You wanted location, you got it. What is wrong with you?
If you think it doesn’t help you then Google some more, I am not doing that for you.
So, does anyone from Unity know the actual answer?
5.2.1p1 just took another 2GB without return.
You can always have it downloaded to the directory of your choice too.
Go to System Drive:\Users<Your User>\AppData\Local\Data is where I’d guess but I manually download.
Then again they could be using the default OS browser but that’s doubtful because people change that and so it might not be available in an easily reproducible way.
Seeing as large downloads often fail Unity probably is not using an OS temp directly as they risk the cache being purged and then have to pay for you download the entire program again. Unity is more than free, they actually have to pay to let us download it.
You are also rude in accusing Unity of wasting your harddisk space as if it was done by Unity with malice and not for a logistics and economic reason.
But then again you haven’t even told us the operating system you are using so we can properly help you. You expect us list them all for you. Well, no.
So you’re a case of looking a gift horse in the mouth and expecting us to side with you when you complain that the horse is in good health but you don’t like that horse. Well, c’est la vie.
Just download the offline installer. Put it wherever you like.
Hello!
I’m here to confirm @goat_1 is correct.
I’m also including a link to Unity’s Manual for Installing Unity without the Assistant
Hope that helps and best of luck with your projects ![]()
EDIT: Some profiles info is in AppData\Unity
just in case you were looking for that too! ![]()
Looks like it actually downloads it to %TEMP%<RandomFolder> on windows.
You know, you can find that out easily by just checking the executable location during installation.
So OP follow Ryiah’s directions for cleaning up Windows temp space in the post above in the future. ![]()
The information HollieBuckets gave you isn’t useless either as that’s where the Unity editor logs are kept and that’s not so obvious. And if you go one directory up and one directory over from there to %SYSDRIVE%/Users//AppData/Roaming/Unity/Asset* you can move those asset store packages to an external location and create a NT Filesystem junction in the Asset* folder’s place (not a shortcut) to free up more space. It’s up to you to look up how to do that on google or bing if space is your problem.
It’s possible that “C:\Users.…\AppData\Local\Unity” could have cleared on restart, but other than that, none of these locations match.
System Temp isn’t on my C drive, it’s on F:\Temp, but Unity’s installation (with custom download location selected - F:\UnityTemp) still takes 2GB+ of C space during install.
They ask for an install location, a temp download files files location, then put 2GB+ elsewhere. Clearly that will piss people off. We don’t live in 1995 where everyone uses the C drive for everything. They shouldn’t be touching it without asking.
Where are you installating it too? We all understand the downloading but where is it that you are installing it?
Installing to “F:\Unity\Unity 5.x.x”.
Hi Folks! So I really want to give you the absolute best answer. The fact is Unity gets installed in multiple locations depending on OS settings, which version of Unity you download, and what packages you install with it. When I asked a couple of the devs their response was, “You need to be more specific. What temp files and what is the environment?”
Its probably not the answer you wanted to hear
and that can be extremely frustrating. Having chatted with the devs a bit, I think most of the answers on this thread are correct given the right setting. +1 to everyone for caring and being committed to finding the answer to this one! ![]()
I know if you install the sample project(?) It goes to the c drive. Not sure where vs gets installed if you checked that too.
