Installing Unity on Windows XP

I have downloaded the trial Unity 2.1.0 dmg software. dmg seems to be an Apple Mac format. How do I instal the dmg software on my Windows XP computer?

Thank you anyone.

Hi Andrew,

Currently, the Unity editor is a Mac only software. So while you can build games for Windows with Unity, you need a Mac to do so.

There’s a Windows port of the editor in the works, but there is no release date announced, yet. When you search this forum with the keyword “windows”, you’ll get a lot of threads discussing this issue

Personally (but like many others), I bought a Mac about a year ago just to run Unity and am very happy with that decision. Unity to me is a perfect example of why Mac OS X is a pretty cool operating system (and I was and am a happy Windows user, too - but Windows now only runs in VMWare Fusion on my Mac, under Mac OS, for stuff like office and Visual Studio  ).

Another option might be trying installing Mac OS on a Windows machine (keyword for Google: “hackintosh”) … or waiting patiently until the Windows port of Unity is available at some point in time. UT is working on it, but a release date is not yet available.

Sunny regards,
Jashan

Thank you Jashan for your courtious and excellent reply. The Unity website with its download and Windows System details, does give the false impression that it runs on Mac and Windows.

I will look for a Mac emulator for Windows or, as you say, get a secondhand Mac!

Jashan, also congratulations on your perfect English. My German sprechen ist kaput!

Thank you, Andrew

You’re welcome!

When I saw the Unity website the first time, it wasn’t totally clear to me that the editor is Mac only, either - but I realized it when trying to get a Windows demo and then checking out the forums about it.

Good luck on getting a secondhand Mac (preferably an Intel-based one since those perfectly run Windows in VMWare Fusion or Bootcamp)!
