Instancing prefabs/GameObjects using JSON

I want to be able to generate 2d rooms using a background image and a few other variables for a game I am making. I was hoping to use JSON to store these details to avoid having to hardcode everything into the game.

My question is basically can I do this and if so, how? If not can you suggest another way of doing this?
