«The fastest Laptop ever!» says steve.
when can we expect unity to be universal binary?
How much does Mono affect Unity going to a Universal Binary? Is Unity at the mercy of the Mono open source community? I wonder.
We will be releasing a standalone and web player universal binary as soon as we can.
Unity universal binary itself will be released shortly after.
Your fear about Mono holding us back is unfounded, the latest version of mono is compiling and running on universal binary. There are some small garbage collection related bugs that will be fixed very soon.
Great! Thanks for the quick response.
To be very specific.
We are planning to roll out Universal Binaries of the web player and standalone player in February. So your published games run on the intel macs.
Unity itself will follow after that. We are planning to get it out in March.
This is also the time when Apple will release their Pro Apps for Universal Binary. So we are in good companion.
Sounds great, you guys are so on top of things Jeff
Has anyone tested Rosetta with Unity? I am considering buying Unity soon, and would like to know what the Upgrade strategy for intel Mac is.
In other words: Should I purchase Unity now, or wait until March if I am using an intel Mac.
At the moment, Unity doesn’t work under Rosetta. We’re working on getting an Intel-native version out. We expect native games in February and Editor in March (1.3).
All upgrades within 1.x are free (and hence this one), so there is no need to postpone your purchase - esp. if you already have an old mac to get started with.
Cheers,
Hi,
I’ve already tested Unity under Rosetta and it worked fine. But then I figured out that I still had v1.1.1 on my disc. After upgrading to Unity 1.2.1 it didn’t work in Rosetta. So somewhere between 1.1.1 and 1.2.1 the Rosetta compatibility was broken. Maybe set helps a little bit.

We have been testing on our own DTK and Rosetta didn’t work.
However i sent a unit test framework to ATI
(So they will never break backwards compatiblity on our shaders) yesterday and they reported it worked on their Intel iMac.
So apparently apple did some changes in those new machines that make Unity Players work under Rosetta.
Well, in that case would I be able to get the 1.1.1 version of Unity so I can work on my new i(ntel)Mac when it arrives?
To Martin: Was everything very slow under Rosetta, or just kinda slow? I’ve tested a few apps running under Rosetta, and I’ve been overall really impressed with speed.
Hi,
I only tested it for a few minutes to see if my Cheetah3D .jas files were loaded correctly on the Intel Macs. And that worked fine. But I can’t say it everything actually worked because my test was to short for that.
In general Rosette works very well. The experiences I made with Cheetah3D is that the native Intel version is 3 times faster than running it under Rosetta. I guess that ratio should hold for most apps.
