Interactive installation: giant projection mapping using Unity

Hi there! I returned from Moscow last week after having installed a Unity project of mine there. It’s a projection mapping on a very large spiral sculpture at the heart of a new shopping mall there. Aside from a big prerendered show, the sculpture is also home to interactive content, created in Unity - only the latter was done by me.

There are four touch screens located around the sculpture on which three different mini-games can be played. Every move is shown on the projection, so bystanders can follow along and players can compete. The games are all existing concepts, by request of the client - the people passing through the mall should be able to pick up and play without needing to learn the games.

The idle content on the sculpture - the triangles change colour by either cascading down the ribbons, or interlocked, as shown below.

The touch screen kiosks’ menu is a colourful 3D scene, fitting with the triangulated theme that runs throughout the mall’s branding.

Very impressive would be nice to see some videos of the games in action.

I didn’t include any video yet because I don’t have any decent footage. Here’s a little cell phone recording I did though:

How did you do the projection mapping?

The projection mapping itself was not done by me, but by a video technician and his d3 media servers. I send 2 full HD outputs to the d3 servers which represent the two halves of the spiral. The output is especially arranged to fit the sculpture.

Which is not to say that I haven’t done projection mapping with Unity itself, but for a project of this scale something more fleshed out and tried and tested is required.
