Interactive T-Rex

Portfolio piece WIP. Modeled in Wings3D, rigged in Blender, and interactivity added in , of course, Unity. I know there’s some problems with it here and there, hence the WIP status.

Wow, it looks very nice! Just curious, how many polys is the model?

I really like the idea of having an interactive t-rex

He looks really cool, though the roar and attack animations should probably return to the idle position (maybe play it with a ping pong if you don’t have an animation that returns).

I haven’t seen one before and I think it’s a great idea - keep it up!

WOW! What’s most impressive is that you modeled this in Wings3D. I know Wings is a good modeler but this is the best example I’ve seen by someone using it. Very nice example project. A couple ideas to make it even more interesting:

  1. It would be nice if the “roar” animation could mix with the walking animation so both happen at the same time.

  2. Maybe add “locomotion” ( Locomotion System | Animation Tools | Unity Asset Store ) and “head look” ( http://unity3d.com/support/resources/unity-extensions/head-look-controller). That would really make this project stunning!

Good luck!

oo that’s nice!

Thanks for the comments, guys, and the suggestions.

@BigKahuna - Thanks, I didn’t even notice the extensions that were available. I’ll check those out.

@Discord - It’s at around 33k triangles, but the base mesh is less than 8k triangles

Bah, i was thinking “Interactive trex” would be a hiking-based adventure game or maybe a Star Trek one XD

it looks really good. the model is fantastic. the only real problem with the aminmation is that your not adding weight to the walk cycle thats why it doesnt look right. other then that its great.

Very, very cool. I hadn’t heard of Wings 3d before today, since I’ve been working with Blender exclusively since I started learning.

What makes Wings 3d better for this modeling job than Blender? I’m looking for ways to improve my workflow.

orindoomhammer: You’re right that the walk needs to impart a sense of the weight of the animal.

Thoth: I’m not going to say that Wings3D is a better modeler than Blender. I’ve just used it for quite a long time now, and Wings is a dedicated modeler. I mean, it was designed to just build models and it is very good at that.

Updated to give a little more weight to the stride. Also, changed the model to the low poly version because the subdivided one didn’t really add that much.

Also, I added the a modification of the fur shader to the plane he’s walking on to look like grass. Yeah, I realize the turf should move as he strides. Is there a way to repeatedly slide the texture along the x axis as he walks? *By the way, that fur shader is very cool.

looks abit better does blender have an animation graph editor? if so you should go threw and smooth out the steping animation. also it looks as if the pelvis is moveing with out the rest of the model.also the toes have a small pause before rotateing into place for the down step. im just now starting to learn animation so i cant really say much just point out a few things here and there for you. and i know nothing of blender. so good luck and i lookforward to seeing more updates.little more tweaking and you should have it.

keep up the good work.
