In another thread, I brought up Splatoon as another case where Nintendo is redefining a genre (in this case the multiplayer shooter) in a very fresh and interesting way.
I just found this interview with the Splatoon designers. It’s really interesting to see the process they went through, the deep design problems they struggled with, and how they eventually overcame them.
Many of us would have gotten caught up on some of these problems and stopped at the “I guess it’s fun” stage, producing a so-so game. It’s really interesting to see how they kept pushing and trying out different things, and why. I think there are some good lessons here for us to learn from.
Now I just need to find a friend with a Wii U…
