The topic is a little misleading. It suggests that the iPhone was the first device to offer multitouch displays. The truth is that multitouch has been under development for many years by a lot of people, and there have been a lot of demos like this one long before the iPhone was demoed. It may be the first multitouchscreen device to be mass marketed, but it’s by no means the originator of the technology.
That doesn’t mean that I don’t look forward to this technology being available everywhere… so cool.
I love the multitouch technology but i also have to say that these kind of input devices can get on your nerves according to the material as most people aren’t used rubbing their fingers over a material for a longer time. It already feels strange/hurts on certain notebooks. So this really needs to be mixed with a proper surface or beeing independent of a real contact if it’s a device you’re using a lot.
Yeah, it is certainly an issue to be addressed. I did a touch screen installation back in highschool and it was always a concern, getting fingers all over the surface.
I’d suggest maybe computer gloves, if the result wasn’t so dorky
Maybe we’ll see it evolve such to a form of electro-induction such that you never need to actually touch the surface; similar to some drawing tablets.
Reminds me of a project i once did for a fair device where you were pointing around in a big infrared (?) frame whithout any contact. You needed a different approach to make a proper steering and guess what it hurt in your arms after some time if you weren’t Popeye… ;O)
So i think you somehow still need something to lay your hands on. Maybe best would be if you’re independent of the surface but you still can use it…
Maybe the liquid could also alter it’s stiffness according to what’s going on (nano robots or a biochemical material as a basis. Would be a new “rumble” experience… ;O)
If it could get hard as cement you could arrest people this way if they sneeked behind your firewall or just to make sure you logout properly. Ohoh if this isn’t bugfree… ;O)
