Ipad competition announced

The Galaxy Tab powered by Gingerbread! Is their marketing department run by pre-schoolers or something?

hehe … the funny thing is the hw is the same as on the galaxy s phone and even funnier, the cpu use in it is the same that powers the 4th gen iphone / itouch and ipad too …

not so much of competition for samsung  (yet the gpu naturally easily crushes any apple product, as apple is still dumping around on the 24month old sgx 535 while the galaxy is on sgx540 which isn’t the newest but at least worlds ahead and at least capable of feeding sizes larger than 3gs reasonably fillrate wise)

Sounds like a winner.

My iPad has collected dust under the bed for months now because I hate it.

Things that would make this a winner for me:

  • Ability to have it show up as a normal HDD when connected to a computer
  • Easy transfer of movies, pictures, documents etc. (if it shows up as a HDD this is of course easy)
  • Ability to play normal movies without spending days converting them
  • Ability to use it as a backup/storage of images from my Camera when traveling.
  • Ability to connect my mp3-player and copy songs from and to my tablet

All these are huge issues for me and something I haven’t been able to do with my iPad.

Really? I’m liking mine FAR more than I ever thought I would. Haven’t touched my laptop since buying it.

You can do all that with the iPad using GoodReader.

Again, there’s an app for that. AirVideo streams just about any movie format to the iPad from your computer in real time. Does a damn good job, too.

You can do that with Apple’s camera connection kit, $30.

I thought this thread was going to be about a competition for iPad developers. :-/

No offense to you, but I’m not really into convincing myself that limited iPad apps work as good as the proven workflows I’ve used all my life.

GoodReader is abyssmal compared to just drag dropping files from and to your computer as you would with a laptop or external HDD.

I’ve tried AirVideo as well as nearly every other iPad video converting app out with an open mind, but honestly, just the fact that I have to convert my movies to watch them is enough for me to let the iPad collect dust. And when do you actually watch a movie on your iPad if you’re near a computer? Then I would just watch the movie on my big computer or tv screen instead of the tiny iPad screen.

Before going on my last vacation I spent hours converting movies dialing in the correct settings etc. using trial and error. Some apps handled subtitles, others didn’t, some movies became huge, others small, some movies were cropped, some were stretched and some didn’t play at all.

I don’t pay $30 for an usb port.

Basically I just want my tablet to not artificially limit me every step of the way. It was fun to fiddle around with my iPad when I first received it browsing some web pages, testing some games and apps, but the moment I brought it on my vacation wanting to use it as a substitute for a laptop it simply failed on every account.

I think the iPad works as a gizmo laying on the coffee table or as a gaming device (if someone can make some good games for it :))

Hm… I’d be willing to take it off your hands… Free up some space under your bed… :stuck_out_tongue:

Best wishes,

Limited?

You’re a developer… if you think you can do better, develop it.

Again, GoodReader allows you to do just that. Just map the IP address to a drive.

Again, no prior conversion is necessary with AirVideo, choose “Live Conversion” and it streams videos in REAL TIME.

So, you complain about the inability to watch movies on the iPad, and then say you’d never use it anyway?

And FYI, AirVideo supports video out.

AirVideo supports subtitles and has handled every format I’ve thrown at it.

You could also try CineXPlayer, which plays xvid avis with no conversion of any kind.

Then don’t complain about missing functionality that you are unwilling to pay for.

Well, I’d agree with you that Apple should have less limitations on the device and on us as developers. I suspect competition from Android will (eventually) cause them to ease some of their restrictions.

But it’s never going to run the full blown OSX, and will never support Flash. If that’s what you’re looking for, get a Modbook.
