iPad performance issue

Hi All,

Whenever I have an object too close to the camera I get a huge FPS drop (from 30+ to less than 20), especially when the object uses a transparent shader.

The scene is made up of a tunnel, a main character moving around inside it, and a few objects made up of “plane” mesh. According to the stats, around 6k verts and 25 emulated draw calls.

Is it considered normal for iPad and I should avoid objects getting too close to the camera, or is there anything that I might have done wrong?

Thanks in advance.

if they get close its no direct problem, but if they use blending, especially alpha its a massive problem as the ipad and iphone 4 are seriously fillrate limited (they have the gpu of the 3GS but 4 respectively 5.2 times the pixels to render)

I’ve found this too. Transparent objects in my game were causing big slowdown on the iPad at native resolution (running the app at iPhone resolution was fine - if you like it big and chunky ;-).

The only solution is to use as little alpha blending as possible on iPad.
