So, I just reserved an iPad for pickup. Bare bones wi-fi, but I’m pretty excited. I’ve already been tuning my game (still unreleased) for it and can’t wait to try it out on the real hardware instead of the simulator.
Figured people could chime in here and share hopes and dreams or just say what you did (pre-order or reserve) and what model you got.
Just pre-ordered mine for delivery on the 3rd. Went with the mid-range 32 gig wi-fi model. I’ve been considering an e-book reader for years but was never thrilled with them so I’m excited to have this for that reason, also going to be nice to have a portable movie device, portable gaming device, portable internet access… lot’s of uses and reason’s to be looking forward to it.
Yeah, sorry about it being US only right now. I mean sorry to have a thread like this for those who can’t get in on it yet. We’ll save a spot for you. How about chime in if you WOULD have pre-ordered/reserved today if you could have.
yeah better than believing that someone saves a spot for me instead of getting another one waving maniacly while running out the store
I likely wouldn’t have preordered it. not because I don’t want to get it but because my funding at the time is too low and the Unity Pro / Unity iPhone Pro upgrades from my curring unity pro / iphone advanced is just more important at the time
I hate the way all the kids over on Toucharcade think it is going to be a massive failure (along with a lot of internet users).
Methinks they just want to look cool and knowledgeable about the industry; I reckon this is going to be huge. get the salt ready for those hats! Looking back at previous Apple products people have said exactly the same thing (even about the iPhone and iPod, and we all know how well those sold).
they potentially will be right in one specific aspect that hurts the ipad and thats the lack of flash in the browser which really is a must have as it is kind of a “cool and different netbook” and just built for flash gaming in front of the tv yet you can’t do it
I tend to think that over time (2-3 years) the ipad will be huge and create a totally new line of products just like apple hopes it will. Everyone will have something like an ipad within 5 years me thinks.
Well, a lack of flash gaming on the iPad is very good for any of us who want to develop games for it.
I’ve been noticing a steady migration of game innovators to the iPhone platform (some of them live right here in unityville). The iPad is an even more exciting place for your great game ideas to live, imo. After all, people will be using iPads during leisure time, not while on a bus or in a line.
Most of the big successful flash games are almost all porting to iPhone/iPad, too. If they don’t they risk someone else taking their basic premises and releasing something better.
The only thing flash offers as a game development platform is web browser ubiquity. Flash has the opposite on the iPhone/iPad platform and developers/publishers continue to rush and fill the void with both free and paid apps.
There might be a small backlash when some casual iPad buyers are mystified why farmville doesn’t work, etc. but I don’t think that is something Apple will have a hard time overcoming. If only we could buy ad space on the little broken flash plug-in squares. lol.
Personally, I plan on waiting until I see what others think about it before I lay down my money. As of right now, I think it just looks like a big iTouch. So I’ll probably save my money for something a little more innovative.
True enough, but this is potentially for our own good
Sure, I think it is a little draconian to leave it wanting of flash, but it certainly will send people to the app store for games, which means more $/£/€ for us.
I just pre-ordered the wifi+3g 16G version along with the case and keyboard dock. I’m excited but I doubt I’ll be able to get it away from the rest of the family except when they sleep.
When the iPad was announced I was very excited. I have dreamed of a tablet sized personal information appliance for years…many years. When I saw the demonstration of the iPad I was somewhat disappointed. For one thing I wanted a tablet I could use for sketching with a proper stylus. Still, while it may not have been exactly the dream, it looked darned good. And it seemed to me to have a lot of potential as a gaming platform. So… I decided to switch my focus away from PC games and to the iPhone platform.
Trouble was, I didn’t have a Mac and as near as I could tell Unity would not run on the Apple II that I have in a box in the attic. Thus I needed a new computer. So I got myself a refurbished MacBook Pro from Apple. What a gorgeous piece of hardware! I love it. But it cost a few pennies. Actually, lots of pennies.
Of course, I also needed Unity iPhone. I was actually using a trial version when they announced Unity 3. Wow! That was exciting. Needless to say, I’m upgrading my 2.x Pro to 3. With iPhone thrown in.
And now I’ve ordered the iPad. I know that somewhere in my unconscious I’ve totaled all these purchases and some part of me is screaming at another part of me that I must be insane. But I’m ignoring them both.
After all, I know what I’m doing here. I’ve got it all figured out. I’m sure I do. Well…mostly?
I would say it’s far better than nothing indeed! I quite like it. I have a pogo stylus that I previously received as a gift. I just spent the last half hour playing with Brushes on my iPod Touch and I’m impressed. It suits my doodle-art style of drawing.
I’m wondering with this in mind, wouldn’t it be possible to make a pressure sensitive stylus and use it on the ipad (or any touch sensitive screen). That way making the pen pressure sensitive instead of the screen? Just a thought…
