Does anyone know why a iPhone 3G would have much less desirable performance than an iTouch 1st or 2nd Gen?
I’m seeing massive losses in frames per second when moving the app to the phone as opposed to one of my iPods

This is normal.
There’s a lot of overhead running in the background hogging resources on the iPhone that the iPod’s don’t have to deal with. Furthermore, a 2nd gen iTouch also has a little more processing power than previous models. My iTouch 2nd gen. gets double the framerate of my iPhone 3G.
That’s interesting, but what I’m seeing is that my first generation iPods still beat out the 3G in terms of performance.
Does the iPhone do a lot more in the background… constantly?
Yes it does. Also, is your phone jailbroken? Because that’ll hog up some CPU as well.
Thought the background work can be reduce if you go into flight mode for example.
Some games generally go as far as recommend to disable WiFi (itouch and iphone) to get more performance.
The core benefit the itouch has is that less stuff hogs the RAM so the slowdowns that happen if more than 90 - 95% of the RAM are filled happen far less regularily.
The iPhone is stock (aside from having been set as a development device)
Also instruments didn’t show too much running at the same time (springboard seemed to be the most vile background process while the game ran)
I’ll have to look into going into flight mode and if that affects performance.
