iPhone 5 Tomorrow... and I'm a little worried!

Hi

So, anxious to hear whether or not the new iPhone 5 announced tomorrow will have a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Not sure about anyone else, but this really sticks a hot poker in my asset pipeline and gameplay…

Or am I over-reacting? :rage::(:face_with_spiral_eyes:

Welcome to the world of anything-but-iOS videogame development constraints :stuck_out_tongue:

Yah it looks like it’ll be a wider/taller screen no matter what so you’re going to have to adapt.

Isn’t it iPhone 6?

Why be worried? you’re already dealing with multiple resolutions anyway. Don’t tell me you’re hardcoding everything? There are various strategies that make resolution changes trivial.

going by the PR material where the reflection has shown a 5, potentialy not
but apple likely will do something absolutely stupid and call it new iphone as they did with the ipad. which is great for year 1, but how the hell do you name it the year later?

If rumors are true then its 1136x640, which is still more than simple enough. UI can just auto adopt with this small change.

What will likely be of much more impact is that this resolution will require iOS6 SDK to work, what will happen otherwise is not known.
iOS6 SDK removes ARMV6 support completely (you can not include it anymore), since iOS 4.3 you can also send in app updates that require that as min version to drop armv6 support. To me this kinda means that the day iOS6 goes live is the day when ARMV6 is finally (godsend) dead on iOS

ios 6

Only apple would make a feature out of 16:9.

LG made a feature of their 21:9 monitor when Philips already have a TV of that ratio.

I’m looking forward to seeing Apple explain why they have gone 16:9. It should only be touted as a feature if they are doing something unique with it.

how about ‘movies from itunes that finally have no stupid black bars anymore’. Thats a pretty big feature
Especially in the light of apps like zatoo, wilmaa etc for IPTV streaming which come at 16:9 which on all current gen devices mean bars somewhere or cutoff content

My guess is that it simply allows them to give customers what they have been asking for since before the 4 (e.g. a bigger screen, higher res) without forcing a drastic change in the size of the device, which is a bit of a cop out in my opinion as it won’t make much difference at all.

Announced in an hour?! cool. curious to see what it will look like, imo, the 4 is the best design they’ve ever had.

Not sure where smartphones are going when compared to 7" tablets … I still think one $20 Nokia + Kindle Fire HD / mini iPad is a win-win situation for the general public

Should be announced in about an hour, not tomorrow.

or about a million other places.

Thank you for the link Jaimi!
I was wondering what time it will be released.

So who will be pre-ordering? hahah. Very curious about the price tag on this.

The same thing you do with iMacs, MacBooks, iPod touch, etc…you would just say “iPhone”, and if you need to distinguish between models, use the year. The iPad is not actually called “new iPad”, just “iPad”. They were referring to it as “the new iPad” just to distinguish from the iPad 1 and 2, since they dropped the number. (At first I thought “new iPad” was the actual name, but fortunately it wasn’t.)

I think dropping the iPad number was a bad idea… with the iMacs and stuff, they stop selling the previous version. When you’re actively selling 3 models, calling them all “iPhone” is retarded. I’m certain they’ll call it 5, judging from the promotional material.

5 it is!

All previous apps will run inside of a pillar/letterbox to accomodate the different aspect ratio. The iPhone 5 looks wholly unimpressive to me, personally… it’s finally catching up to some more recent features of its competitors, but the ecosystem wasn’t designed with resolution-independence in mind so it’s going to be annoying for end users for awhile as they wait for new versions and software.
