Iphone Dev program necessary for unity Iphone Trial?

I’ve been working on a game for a little while and want to start porting it to the iphone. I don’t, however, want to spend the 400$ for Unity Iphone and the 100$ for Apple dev program before I have tried it out.

My question is; do I need to be in the Iphone dev program to get the Trial of Unity Iphone?

Yes you have to.

Well, you don´t have to be in the developer program to get iphone unity, but when you get it and are not in the developer program you can´t test the things you make on the iphone, so that wouldn´t be that good.

Tom (Higgins) asked me if I was - so I guess you have to be, and the reason is simply because you need Xcode to build for the iPhone (a restriction by Apple). Basically Unity creates an Xcode project, and then you use Xcode to build and put the project on the iPhone. You also need that to build the Unity Remote and put it on your iPhone (which is an incredibly cool tool).

I would recommend getting into the iPhone Dev program and getting acquainted with Xcode before getting the trial. Otherwise, you’re up for some frustration (that whole iPhone Dev / Xcode thing can be a little overwhelming when you first start with it).

When you manage to get a simple “Hello World” on your iPhone with the Xcode/iPhone Dev stuff, getting the Unity iPhone trial and playing around with it is just pure fun.

without beeing part in the dev program you can not use the Remote, you can not install anything on your iphone, neither can you test sound and accelerometer, as they are not supported in the emulator.

So some touch testing in a fictive iphone is the only thing you could do.

Okay, thanks for answering ( and so quickly)

I am in the Apple Developer program and can develop apps for the iPhone. The demo I downloaded only created apps for the desktop web. Is there a version available that will create for the iPhone?

And did you look around the trial download page at all? You may have seen this:

So drop us a line at sales@unity3d.com if you want to evaluate our iPhone publishing abilities (and when you do tell us that you’re an iPhone dev with the SDK installed so we don’t have to ask).
