Is application bar allowed on WP8?

I tried initializing the bar in code, and when I failed, I tried in XAML, but both cases failed.
Anyone knows how can I show it in game?

OK nevermind. I made a mistake putting the DrawingSurfaceBackgroundGrid in StackPanel, and putting stuff in the StackPanel instead of the DrawingSurfaceBackgroundGrid layout. It works fine now.
