Is educational games/ quiz games doesn't really considered a game?

Hi there,

I recently submitted this game

to this competition

And it didn’t get through. I was wondering if being a quiz action game carried any demerits to be chosen as game.

What are your views?

You are welcome to play this. Please give me your feedback. Trying to do a quick postmortem, to overcome to the disappointment.

Please feel free to criticize this. This is my first game. So, I’m ready to take the beating! :sunglasses:

Your game is a prime example of exactly the type of educational game people should be showcasing. It combines action racing to engage the player (especially kids) but also requires them to think fast by answering questions correctly. Nice Job! Imagine a kid taking a school quiz by playing a video game like this one!

Competitions would arise two fold. The first is getting a good score by getting the answers right, The other would be who can get the best lap time in the class for bragging rights etc. Training is two fold as well, studying for the right answers and practicing for better hand eye coordination.

As for educational games not really being considered a game. This is a false statement. The game you made is a good solid educational game. But the term “game” is a extremely wide ranging one. Myst was considered a game but it was just pointing and clicking. To define what makes a game a game is in the eye of the beholder so to speak.

As for my criticizing, the game is visually pleasing but the car physics need a bit more work. The car does not quite flip when turning a corner (I would make it harder to flip or take away flipping entirely), and starting from zero acceleration is far too slow. Consider using guard rails instead of posts along the edge of the road. Hitting a post results in a dead stop and back to slow acceleration. Hitting a guard rail would just slow you down.

Not really much else to say about it just a few minor tweaks here and there to keep the action and pace flowing. Otherwise good job!

Side note just because I’m thinking of it.

I used to play a lot of World of Warcraft and what people fail to realize is that a lot of what you learn about the game comes from reading and studying on your casting rotation for your class, boss abilities, lore etc. This is not much different then an educational game other then the fact that the content you are studying for is within a fantasy game world. Simply changing the content to say a historical piece on ancient Rome for example you could turn WOW into a engadging educational game fairly easily and learn about history at the same time.

Thanks for the quick reply.

As I’m getting recovered from the initial disappointment, your words truly helps me in regaining my belief.

Yes, I believe there can be games which not only tests the logical, spatial and cognitive skills, but the knowledge and intellect base of players. I believe these games can be single player, or multiplayer, where there can be wargames based upon knowledge.

And I believe playing these types of games can give you fun as well.

Even in this small game, if you can reload this with your own questions and no of laps, this will come real handy in doing revisions of study mats before school exams for your kid.

I want to proceed with this idea, even it was a dud in the said competition.

Thanks for supporting this idea.

This is a great idea! It was kind of fun, but the way the car falls over is annoying even on slight bumps, and the questions were hard… haha I couldn’t answer most of them but I guess if I was from your country I would.

I also think (if it doesn’t already) having it be able to connect to server software like on a server a teacher could set the questions and number of laps then when the device has done it tells the server that it is done(for homework!)

And maybe different level kind of things like say a racing one.

Yes, that’s the idea to realize. The users should be able to create and share their quiz. That’s really makes this game into a study tool.

This is a very nice idea. I wish I could have thought of something similar for my Serious Games class…

They are games if they are done right, and this definitely is a good one. I enjoyed playing it at least, and I believe kids would too.

On a side note, I managed to break the game by going down the wrong lane, and after being spawned back, going down the wrong lane again at high speed. It makes the car flip on its back and gets stuck. Then again, that’s a minor thing and it only happens if you’re purposefully trying to break the game

Thanks for playing the game. Yes, I can see there are bugs. Then also, this game was not extensively play tested. I’ll have to do that before getting this released.

Hey this is a fantastic idea, it was really creative how answering the question either takes you in the right direction or causes rubble to fall on you. I can totally imagine a game like this being full of awesome facts maybe focused on a single subject, it would be fun and educational.

Education can be fun, it’s just that it’s stuck in a rut of gotta be serious, head down in the books studying.

Hello game designers,

I’ve hosted Quiz Safari as a Facebook App.

I’ve done this mainly to gather advices to make Quiz Safari better. Please visit the page, like and share to spread the word. Especially to school kids. Would love to get their feedback.

Also, please don’t forget to give your designer insights. Please tell me what it needs to be more challenging, competitive and fun.

Waiting for your feedback. Dearly need it.

I’m going to assume the education isn’t about the English language.

Not really, the quiz can be just about anything. Even game programming!
