is houdini supported?

.

If it exports to .fbx, yes. Only Maya, Max, Blender, Cinema 4D, and Cheetah 3D files can be used directly.

Houdini and modo are notably absent from this list:

Unity talks to Houdini over network socket
can load any data from houdini including the node network and geometry.
houdini can be local or on a remote machine.

Uh… rom, what is that, exactly? I’m trying to integrate Unity and Houdini here at Side Effects and you’ve got my attention in a big way!

Ooh nice, do tell do tell!

That looks very interesting Rom! would you mind elaborating in more detail what you have going on there? Being able to use Houdini in game development would be a dream come true for me.

When exporting from Houdini to Unity it’s worth knowing too that you can pre tristrip everything inside Houdini, makes for even speedier imports into Unity and you can control exactly how the tristrips are made which is handy sometimes.

And you’ve got mine… what form will this integration take? Is this an official project or just a personal one?

Can’t say too much at the moment. We have several game studios as customers and we’d like to have more, as well as see greater uptake of Houdini in the indie community, including modders. Part of that would include proof that yes, Houdini is a good tool for game development. I suspect plenty of us know it in our guts, but seeing it actually work is a whole new level of legitimacy.

Wow… I can’t believe I ditched Houdini Apprentice for Carrara and Hexagon! Maybe I was underestimating Houdini too much before seeing this. Now that I see how Houdini’s true power works, maybe Side Effects might have won me back, but who knows?

Actually, in other apps, I think that SoftImage 2012 works a lot like Houdini in a way, iirc, but not sure what fomats that exports to. I could get the student version of XSI 2012 fairly easily if I wanted to, but not sure how well that would work.

Houdini is an awesome tool for anything
Seeing tight integration between my 2 favourite tools would be insane!
Sidefx and Unity have a lot in common a great match I think.

Houdini .geo file importer, with 2 x uv maps and vertex color

I love Houdini and this looks very promising
