Now I’ve finished university I’m really looking forward to starting Unity, especially the iPhone side of Indie Development. However, as all with all recently graduated students - I’m completely tight on cash.
I’ve just got myself an iMac and the iPhone basic licence, my plan was to learn and release a few games, either save up or make some money on app store to eventually buy the Unity Pro and then Unity iPhone Pro. I do want to do things properly, but as the saying goes, Rome was never built in one day!
Not wanting to copy the same threads on this forum, but I just want to know whether being on a basic licence I’m going to be held back when learning to create iPhone games.
I see users in the community are releasing Plugins (such as Prime31, GameCenter), are these all exclusive to Pro? I couldn’t seem to find any definate answer. I understand I cannot use AssetBundles such as the character customization tutorial, but how about any plugins that have been released?
If anyone has a couple of free minutes, I’d love to know in layman terms what I’m going to be missing out on.
Obviously my starter games are going to be extremely basic - I don’t intend to rush the learning curve. I don’t aim to make the next best RPG or action game, simple puzzles is where I’m looking at, perhaps a few scrollers and odd aim and click shooters.
Plugins are Pro-only on Unity 1.x but will be available in Unity iPhone Basic with 3.0, so you should be fine. I’m pretty sure that Prime31 has said as much in the thread about his plugins.
Thanks for the fast reply sybixsus2, so with iPhone basic it will update to version 3.0 free of charge? (with Unity free of course)
I wasn’t sure on version numbers, thanks for clearing that up.
One other question, what is unity’s multiplayer over 3G/3GS ability like for the iPhone. Can simple tic-tac-toe style games work through 3g with the new GameCenter.
*I’ve not looked into Unity Multiplayer at all, and won’t be for a while - it was just for future ideas.
If you “just bought Unity iPhone”, then you will get 3.0 at no additional cost.
From the store page:
I know 2.6 is the desktop edition, but still.
In fact, I thought that people who had purchased were already getting the beta, but maybe that’s Pro only or maybe you bought it very, very recently and it hasn’t filtered through yet.
