Hi I have a couple of big school projects coming up and would like to know how stable the LWRP and HDRP are for projects. I understand they are in preview mode but does anyone know how stable they are? Are there any issues that I should be aware of and can I just disable it if I run into issues?
Be aware that you need to set up your content in a certain way to be able to use the pipelines. If you run into a situation where you want to switch back to built-in, it’s not simply a matter of switching off the pipeline. You may have to rework some of your content.
Both LWRP and HDRP are currently in preview and are not released as ‘production-ready’.
We are aiming for LWRP to be production-ready (And remove the Preview Tag) for 2019.1 and HDRP sometime later in 2019.
Hi thanks for the reply. Production for my school final project doesn’t start until about the end of March and is meant to be a 8-10 minute presentation not a commercial release. Is it really risky to use the HDRP?
Would you drive an untested car across the country?
Across the country probably not. Maybe to the corner store and back though.
If you want any sort of reliability what-so-ever, then no. The end of March? That’s a long time in development world, anything could happen, change, or add to the HD and LD pipelines. I would recommend them for learning and casual purposes only, at this current date in time. I would get used to it though, shit’s gonna drop soon.
What do you want to create with HDRP?
Mostly the volumetric fog and volumetric lights. I don’t think we are allowed to use paid plugins. Plus the bloom looks much nicer.
Thanks I’ve tried Aura(version 1) and it seemed broken to me. Unfortunately the game view would fail to render most of the time so I gave up. Maybe I was doing it wrong but I was using the version from the asset store.
There’s also Vapor on GitHub.
Is it VR? then no, don’t use HDRP until 2019.3
Cos VR support in HDRP isn’t going to be optimal for a long time (it doesn’t even work properly at the moment).
No it isn’t for VR. It’s essentially a sidescrolling 2.5D platformer.
…If you’re using HDRP for that, you’re likely dramatically overengineering things.
For a school project with side scrolling 3D, you can use HDRP fine as its a simple use-case and I don’t think you would have many problems with it, frankly.
If it was client-critical or for business I’d just recommend LWRP or builtin. I still recommend you make sure that it is OK by your school to be using Unity + Package manager for this.
Understand that if you run into issues with the HDRP that most of the community has not actually been building projects using it, so it may be difficult to get help if you do encounter a problem.
A school final project really isn’t that big a deal. Its low risk. If it doesn’t work, there isn’t much riding on it.
Which means that you are free to go nuts with the experimental stuff.
I think it’s better using built in pipeline if you want quick help when shit happens
