Is it possible (and practical) to use Unity engine for...

Hi everyone, I’m Ezekiel.

So, I’ve got this dream to make a revolutionary MMORTS game, a city-builder with inter-empire wars. So are Unity3d’s engines practical to make MMORTS games with?

It has been some sort of life project to me, I’ve been working on the details for years but I will need an engine that can make a game client for my MMORTS servers. Buildings will need to be designed and placeable by the player at the cost of resources gathered by mines, woodcutters etc.

I realize that there are tons and tons of MMORTS games already, but almost all of those I’ve tried (even the browser games) lack certain elements that could truly make the game wonderful. I’m willing to pay for the best available if they can promise it can be done. I’ve seen some tutorials but haven’t found any for RTS games. I do prize graphical quality, excellent interactive storyline and easy to handle gameplay. I’ve seen Unity allows more than sufficient graphical quality for an MMORTS game, it should be playable on low/mid-end PCs as well.

So I’d happily accept your advise and recommendations, anyone with experience is welcome to provide.

~Ezekiel, Rookie Dev~

I don’t know of any reason why it would not be possible. The question to ask yourself though is “are you ready for this big of an undertaking?”. You mention that you are a rookie developer. It likely is out of your reach at this point in time.

I am a rookie in the use of any of Unity’s engines. Though I’ve created parts on other engines to serve as concepts of how I want the real thing to be. Not just RTS games but RPG games as well.

So you’re saying I should try Torque 3D and start creating a few buildings and the gameplay?

Unity is definetly capable of doing this job.

Not many individual game developers will be. Even seasoned devs would hesitate to take on something of this scale as an individiaul.

If you have worked with other games engines before then you’ll learn Unity quickly. One of the major difficulties of an MMO though is the networking. You’ll want to experiment with networked gameplay.

Thank you for your comment, I understand it is a significent undertaking. My plan wasn’t to do this whole thing solo, but create a beginning, a concept to show people what I’m working on. Perhaps create a kickstart and raise some crowdfunds so I can hire some people to help me. Kickstarter is safe for the donators and I’m an honest guy :o)

If I miraculously can do this solo within the next 5 years or so, that’d be awesome, wouldn’t need to go through all the trouble and potential humiliation of telling the co-devs I’m scrapping the project because the money is up :stuck_out_tongue: But I’m not counting on that.

Very well, I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for your advise

Unity, Torque3D, whatever. You can (and people do) make games in many different frameworks. There are a ton of them out there. If you have the time and persistence sure you can do it. Could be a long road but just don’t stop and you will get there sooner or later.

Yes it’s totally possible. Unity probably is the best engine for a small indie team (or single hero coder) to make their game. However, think of Unity has a blank canvas and a box of paint brushes. It’s really up to you and your skill level whether you can achieve something great.

unity is capable of doing any kind of game. But it would take a lot of effort to create what you want

The farthest an experienced programmer would attempt to go alone is a proof of concept with prototype or primitive visualization.

The code is just one of many worries for an MMORTS. Artwork, superb design, and human interfacing are some significant others that come to mind. Oh, and perhaps the most important: marketing.

Unity is of course capable of an MMORTS. With regard to video games, Unity is capable of facilitating nearly everything. The only bottleneck I can think of is rendering but on PC with experienced artists, this shouldn’t be a problem. When you get to making a game of MMO scale, Unity becomes a tool instead of an overprotective mother and 99% of the development is up to you(r team).

Thank you all for your replies!

I was planning to create a concept on my own. I’ve got story, some artwork (I do love drawing them out), and the exact blueprints of how I want it to be. With the concept I could promote the game, perhaps people will offer and help. I’m sure we’ll be able to come to some sort of beneficial arrangement.

Glad to hear Unity is capable of this. I’ve been trying it out for a bit now, I can figure this out on basis of previous experience with some other engines. But I’m sure I’ll run into more complicated things, perhaps writing complex forms of C++.

Just keep in mind that those worth having on a project will almost always want compensation in the form of money and won’t accept profit sharing or other similar arrangements.

This game was (supposedly) made by one dude: WARSHIFT on Steam

If he can do it, well, maybe you can too.

This is really freaking sick!

But that dude had been working in the game industry for 10 years as an artist, game designer, and programmer . If there’s one thing the game industry can teach you, it’s how to make a polished game. On top of his well-rounded experience, he took over 3 years to make the game. You better love the game from the bottom of your heart to dedicate 3 years of your life to a possibly unpaid endeavor.

Do you have a truck with money?

It’s games like these that give you hope and make you feel jealous at the same time.
It’s cool to see stories like this one, Banished, Gunpoint, Meridian: New World, … <keep the list going, guys…>

Oh my!! Have you seen the video and what’s in it? One man AAA, VERY impressive.

Yeah, Warshift looks amazing for a one man project.

He did it with relatively small funds from Kickstarter too. I’ve seen other less ambitious projects asking for more.
