Is it possible to import a texture than use it as a object?

hi,
my friend says that it is possible to import a Texture (PNG) than put it in unity and using it as a object or something along that side.

what we are after is too make a Nova Explosion and what he says is the best way to do that is to put a Texture than expand it, and if you hit that texture than you take damage. my question is, is this possible? or do we need to make a plane than put it on that plane? (we using photoshop to export the PNG so we will have alpha channels)

P:S why we dont use a plane is, cause he says the plane will take unnecceray polys or something like that.
Sorry for asking a dumb question if its something oblivious.

P.S.S i was forced to ask this :x

You need some kind of geometry. Unity’s standard Plane primitive does make too many useless polys, but you can use an modeler to create a simple quad (two triangles) and import that. Or generate it in code. It’s too simple. I wish they’d have a option for how many tris they put in that Plane primitive…
