Is it possible to switch character animations entirely through script?

I would like to have a character iterate through a list of animations. I know that’s possible using the Timeline, but I’m wondering if there is a way to simply provide a list of animations to a character (at run time), and the animations would start playing one by one until the end of the list.
Is it possible to setup animations for a character without an animator controller or Timeline?

This can be done using the Playables API Unity - Manual: Playables Examples , the example given at the bottom of the page under the header Creating PlayableBehavior is pretty close to the scenario you describe.
