Is it true that unity6 will no longer provided in China?

Found a new yesterday in a famous chinese gamer website about Unity 6 will be totally subtituded by Tuanjie(unity china version) in soon. And when the day comes, what china developer can download is only Tuanjie but not Unity6. If any unity official accounts can clarify this, whether it is true or just a rumor,PLZ.It has great impact for Chinese developers using Unity6.

I also want to ask, because I know that the engineering of these two engines is not interoperable.

Yeah, I’m in China. Although you can’t download Unity 6 from the Unity Hub China version anymore, TuanJie Engine will integrate the features of Unity 6.

The problem is they are actually different engines.Unity should leave users to decide which one to use rahter than force chinese developers to choose one.

as a side note:
I’d prefer using China version in some projects…

4 days pass and still no official response :).I thought this kind of problem affecting a large number of developers deserves more attention.Bad news about layoff in Unity recently also make me worry about future of Unity global.

I’m learning Godot right now. Unity is untrustworthy.

Why are these engines split? Some abstruse legal thing?

It is said that the China-specific version of the Unity Engine removes watermarks 15,000 per year, and the packaging applet is 150,000 per year, is it true?

All users registered within China are currently being forcibly redirected to Unity China’s download archive when accessing Unity’s download archive website! And Unity China has currently blocked everything related to Unity 6! (They are trying to forcefully promote their so - called “Tuanjie Engine”, which is almost like a pirated version of Unity by relying on this!) This is really hard to understand! Why does Unity allow such a thing to happen? Or does Unity abandon Chinese users?

As I understood it, China very much restricts a lot of what can be used on the internet, and the end websites dont get a say in it.

Eg, I dont believe it is specifically in unitys control

It seems more like Unity has reached some agreements with Unity China! Currently, Chinese users can hardly access content related to Unity 6 through normal channels (Unity China has even deleted all the published content related to Unity 6)! If it were due to Internet restrictions, we wouldn’t be able to access Unity.com at all.

Currently, it feels like we’ve been “sold” by Unity to Unity China!

I really hope this is just the stupid act of Unity China and has nothing to do with Unity! However, the possibility of that is quite small. To be honest, most people here really hate Unity China! They have no moral bottom - line in pursuit of profit.

I do sympathaise, as a brit I dont suffer this and Ive been aware of unity china, but only in a loose sense, as I dont see it and Im not subject to it, but I also remember there being features unity china put in that the rest of us wanted and we didnt get, but, I dont remember any details… its early am, im not awake, and its been a while…

I didnt realise unity china was regarded as bad, but, again, I sympathise, there is huge frustration. We are in 2025 for heavens sake, we can share files, video, chat and play games with almost anyone in the world. Trying to limit a nation to only parts of that seems, unnecessary. However, Im not fully aware of any laws, rules etc of the nation, but, many of us have hidden limits, example. I fire up netflix here in the UK and tons of stuff on their network is not available to me but is to people in other countries. Its very minor in comparison to how China and other countries go about the internet, but, I also there are news sites which kinda limit some of their content to “local” (eg their country only) access, and provide different to outsiders.

Sadly I dont think here is the best place to get advice from unity on it

I understand your point. I’m just complaining a bit. All I can do is wait quietly and see what the result will be. Since no one has made any statements about this matter so far, most of it is just speculation. It just seems that the current situation is developing in a bad direction.

Unity sold the rights to the Chinese market to Unity China in late 2023. A lot of this is due to the Chinese communist government’s hostility to western companies. China has many rules that violate western laws and norms.

If you are in China, then the Tuanjie Engine is a fork of Unity adapted to the Chinese market.

I didn’t find the address of this webpage. Could you tell me the URL of this webpage? In this way, I can verify whether this piece of news is a rumor.

There is https://unity.cn/releases
There is no Unity 6 download on this page. The latest one is 2023.2.20

Regarding whether Unity 6 can be used normally, the official has deleted the original post. Currently, there is a previous answer here

If you need to view the historical webpage, you can view this link

Unity6 is available on the historical webpage

At present, Unity China only said that there are legal risks in using Unity6 and Unity6 has been removed from the shelves. As for whether it can be used and whether it will be developed separately, the official is currently playing dead. It is only “according to industry staff” that China cannot use Unity6.

Yeah, Unity China has the rights to distribute Unity in China. That’s why the company exists. It’s a lot easier to do business in China through a Chinese company with Chinese citizens running it than it is to do business through a company from anywhere else.

This is completely down to Chinese policy - Unity had a choice between setting up a semi-independent entity in China that leases the engine and brand from Unity, or to essentially let Chinese companies use pirated versions of Unity at will without being able to do anything about it.

If you use any of the workarounds posted above to get access to the western Unity version, you’ll probably not be able to ship the game without facing legal reprecussions, so I’d advice against that if you don’t have an uncle high up in the CCP.
