Howdy Unity developers,
Just a quick question how many of you think it is worth upgrading to Unity 4.x considering I currently have Unity 3.x with both licenses for iOS and Android, is it a huge advantage for mobile development, and else from performance what else should I look up to.
As you said, it is a personal opinion. For my current project, it is not worth to upgrade right now. So I’ll stick with 3.5 until I start something new.
I’d suggest to try it for yourself to make a decision.
Only you can decide that; nobody else can decide it for you. So I would suggest looking over the features, plus downloading Unity 4 and seeing for yourself.
I dont really get the question S:
Is it worth to upgrade? well of course it is. why wouldnt it?
Despite the new features, im sure they have made performance opimizations and they have also improved workflow.
This is unity 4.0 and it took a long time to make, so dont only look at its main features, but think there are alot more behind the scenes.
Amit, upgrading sometimes breaks projects and can take a while to fix the problems manually, depending on the size of the project. It also may be a significant cost to upgrade the licenses.
That was not the question, he asked if it is worth to upgrade… not if it justify the cost, and im not sure if he has a pro license or not
But yea upgrading might give you some errors, but is it really that long to fix? i berely had 2 errors and some warnings when upgraded but nothing that took over 1 minute to fix.
Waiting for 4.1 here. Doing mostly audio related stuff, and the audio programmers have said the long awaited audio rehaul will not be ready before 4.1.
And it’s always good to wait a bit after a major v.X.x release for higher stability. But it’s definitely a huge release and congratz to the Unity team, they seem ready to take on bigger challenges now with all those core features implemented.
Personally I don’t think it will happen, but it can, which is: UT decides a faster release cycle, ending up with the new UI being on Unity 5.0 instead of Unity 4.x. Rule of the thumb for upgrading therefore is: upgrade, when your wanted features already exist in the current version and are not only “announced”.
if it’s wortth to upgrade depends on your personal need, your goals, features needed, finance, etc etc…
It’s not that 3.x series are now obsolete/old/worthless just because 4 is being introduced.
Most of the huge chunks shown in 2011’s roadmap are done with 4.0. The last big one being the UI, I’m really looking forward to it.
It’s one of those “core” features that you want it to be handled natively but HAD to take 3rd party solutions. And now I feel like doing anything UI related is a waste of time because of I’m waiting for it…
If you had Pro previously, what is the charge to upgrade both the base package + iOS? I ask because I am curious as to what it would have cost me, had I bought Pro (I only own the Indie version.)
