Let’s say I buy an FBX model from somebody online. Can I use it in Unity 2.6 (free version) if I don’t have Maya on my computer? Or do I have to spend the $3500 to get a Maya license??? (BTW, I use a PC not a Mac.)
Just put the .fbx right into Unity.
That’s all ![]()
If you want to change it at all, then you’d need a 3D program.
Maya is required if you want to import Maya files. Otherwise it’s not.

If you wanted to edit that model that you buy, then maya or 3ds max would be needed, other than that its a quick drag n drop into unity and it will work perfectly, and you might need to add in the texture via unity aswell ![]()
you could use blender to edit it if needed, however i dont know how accurate its the blender fbx plugin
Blender doesn’t import fbx, it only exports it.
Or anything else that imports fbx files.
–Eric
I believe you can get a fbx importer somewhere for blender…
I’m not sure if there was ever one that was actually finished and works though.
–Eric
Milkshape can import and convert fbx files can’t it? If you just need a one time shot conversion then it would be free, or $20-$30 or whatever it is after 30 days.
Unity natively reads FBX.
You don’t need to convert it or have something else installed for Unity to load it.

You sure Unity doesn’t require Maya on the same system in order to read FBX files? Eric5h5 says it is required, and he has over 10,000 posts. I haven’t read all 10,000 posts of his, but he seems really knowledgeable.
I’d be REALLY HAPPY if Unity didn’t require Maya to utilize FBX files (that include animations).
Eh? I said “Maya is required if you want to import Maya files. Otherwise it’s not.” I didn’t say anything about fbx, which is what Unity imports natively. The reason Maya is required for Unity to read Maya files is because it doesn’t import Maya files at all, it runs Maya in the background and makes it export to fbx.
–Eric
OH! I thought Maya files were FBX. (I’m a programmer, not a 3d artist!)
Well, in any case, I assume you’re really happy now. ![]()
–Eric
You might assume that based on my prior use of “Maya” and “FBX” as synonyms. Apparently I want to work with Maya files, not FBX files. Ah well. ![]()
Fbx or “filmbox” which is now “Motionbuilder” is just a plugin for importing and exporting.
Get the latest for Maya or Max (or others) from Autodesk.

Great, thanks!
