Is my system not up to the job?

Hi All

I have just DL’d the Unity 2.5 Trial and I have started the 3D Platform Tutorial, created and supplied by the Unity team.

I seem to be having a problem with my setup in that my computer freezes and I end up having to power down by pressing the reset button!

This is a consistent event and happens when I hit the play button for game simulation. For those who know the tutorial, the freeze happens just after I have attached the two particle systems to the Lepz character (very early on in the tut).

This sounds like a system requirement issue to me, but I don’t have that weak a setup. It is as follows:

MacPro
OS X 10.5.6
2x2.66 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon (Woodcrest)
3 GB RAM 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB
(Single Montior)

I purchased the system in late 2006 and I would like to know if this should be fine to progress with. I can handle buying more RAM if needed, but a whole new system is a bit out of range for the time being.

Just to add, the only apps running are Unity 2.5 and Preview (to read the PDF).

Thanks in advance.

your system is more than up to it.

sounds more like something is interfering on the rendering end / driver end.

I guess that system was built like that by apple?

Yes, it was built by apple so all drivers etc are simply installed through ‘Software Updates’.

I have also noticed that when I press play to test the game, all the fans power up and seem to be running at full capacity.

I was wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Hey Flynn,

Yep your computer is definitely up to the job. Looks like you have run into the elusive tutorial-particle problem. We’ve had reports on this before, and QA has tried like mad to reproduce it, but we have had a heck of a time getting it to consistently reproduce.

Flynn, you could do us a huge favor. Because this appears to happen regularly for you, would you please try making a simplest-case project where you add particle systems, perhaps making them children of another game object, to reproduce this problem? Then, please file a bug report using the Report a Problem tool, with the test project as an attachment. Maybe with your help we can finally snuff this one out.

best wishes
Caitlyn

Hi Caitlyn,

As this is my first attempt at any real time 3D, it might take a little while for me to work out how to create your request. That said, I have been tasked to explore Unity and should be up, running and able to do this with no problem soon. I will submit a test project in due course.

I don’t know if this had crossed anyone’s mind, but I have been out today and purchased a tin of compressed air. As it happens my system needed a long overdue dusting off.

I have since fired up Unity and clicked play to test the game. My system’s fans kicked in and increased their RPM although no where near their rate from before and my system has not froze as yet…

…Possibly the oldest bug in the book.

I will still submit a test project just in case.

Many thanks
