I will use the forum for the first time.
Is there a place to try out the different features of the forum?
I would like to test the display of images, decoration of fonts, etc.
Is it okay to create a test thread and delete it repeatedly?
Seriously? You just wrote your first post, to play with forum formatting? 
I suggest you learn BBCode. Search for any BBCode online editor. You can have plenty play as you want.
Other than that, you can edit your posts, and you can modify most thins with available panel.
But don’t do that, to play about, as you may receive warning.
Rather please participate in discussions, and learn as you go.
What you may want to learn for sure, is that you can just paste images directly into your post, instead of using url.
When creating a new thread or post, you can see a preview of your content by clicking on the black Preview... button. When posting a reply in an existing thread, this option is hidden behind the black More Options... button instead.
Also, while you can’t delete your own threads, you can always edit your own thread (or post) afterwards 
In fact you can, as long no one replied to it yet.
But I agree with editing and preview aspects.
Do note however that the moderators don’t take kindly to editing-out entire posts to just say something like “solved” after having the question answered.
It’s best to keep them up in case someone else has the same question in the future.
