I’m developing a game for PC/PS4/Xbox One, and I was wondering with regards to the consoles is there a vertices target I should be aiming to stick under? I know these consoles are pretty powerful but there has to be an upper limit somewhere, right?
One of my scenes at the moment is hitting around 3.2 million vertices at any given time, I could do with knowing if this is fine or too much so I can scale things back if needs be.
Because of console NDA’s I don’t think you’ll get an answer here (at least not a specific one). You should reach out to your account managers at Microsoft and Sony and ask them.
This is always kind of a vague question on all platforms. Often the number of vertices is not even largest factor when it comes to performance. Unless your game is full on extremely high poly meshes I wouldn’t worry about it quite yet. But every game is different. This is one of those questions best answered by the profiler.
I wouldn’t get too worried about it yet then. unless you have a track record of releasing well received games, your chances of getting accepted into the ID@XBOX program are pretty slim.
Well, im going to keep working regardless. I know the market is small for shoot em ups but if I make the entire thing myself and make sure its good quality I may have a chance?
This is my latest build (still incredibly early though):
Hi, have to lock this as it’s the rules to direct people to the relevant console development forums instead. So please contact Sony or Microsoft for access to the relevant forums.
Game looks fine though. Just build a scalable game that will run on low/mid/high desktops and you’ll be mostly fine.
