is there a way to force a Max file import that is failing to Unity?

I am running into an issue where I am unable to import max files to Unity. My max files will not open when I double click them even though I have adjusted the properties and the file says it opens with 3d studio max, but doesn’t work to double click, it just tells the file is not a valid win32 application. I realize that this is possibly an issue with windows or max installation… But I wanted to know if there is any way to force an import of a max file. Or if anyone had run into this issue before. Disregard, importing the fbx worked… I was afraid I was going to lose my multisub materials… but I didnt.
