Is there a way to make efficient trail like effect with Shuriken?

Is there a way to make efficient trail like effect with Shuriken? I have been using Shuriken for awhile and I can make most of the particle effects I want, but I always wondered what is the best way to create a trail like effect with Shuriken without using a very high emission rate.

Well, technically you can use stretched billboard to create trails that are straight but that is about it.

You can also create trails that move in a circular path but they will always have a predetermined path and length defined by the texture.

You can also animate a trail in a spritesheet and then animate the texture that is played on the particle.
