Is there a way to swap the weapon objects a model using without needing an entirely new model with new animations?

My team is trying to figure out if it’s possible to, in unity, swap out the weapon a character is using while using the same character model and animations, without needing to create an entirely new model with new animations in blender. I haven’t been able to figure out how to do this. Any ideas or help?

From what I have seen on Characters from Assets like EXFPS where they include the weapons in the bone structure of the character and hide them. When needed they enable them through script.
