Is there an off-topic forum?

Is there?

This is it, but everything must be game-related.

Ah see its not completely off-topic.

But that good be a good forum idea

You mean something like “General Categories”?

Yes

It would be a great place for people to discuss things not related to Unity, then get in arguments, then take that animosity to other areas. Count me as being against an Off-Topic area.

Lol

+1

It was a conscious decision by UT to NOT have an off-topic category… this is a developer forum, and off-topic categories just devolve into a disasterous mess that take time and money to maintain.

I’ve got one in my sig.

It’s not my forum btw. I just like pointing people towards it. It’s full of people that have an interest in games, but are generally over 21. So it’s more mature than traditional gaming forums.

So true. The forums is for people looking for unity related stuff and not boasting bout how fast your com can run some AA games.

Yup, it’s called “the rest of the internet”. There are places for talking about pretty much anything out there, this is a place for talking about games, game design, programming and the Unity game engine, which is why we’re all here. And what makes it good and useful is the fact that it’s remarkably fluff free, which is why we continue to be here and it continues to attract new people.

Hmm…

Under Gossip it says: “General discussion and cool ideas” as its description.
Also, the Gossip FAQ says nothing about what you can and cannot post here.

So really, I don’t remember reading anywhere that you can’t discuss non-game related items here unless I am mistaken. The rules say no religion or politics though, and those topics are always quickly moderated if they tread those waters.

So really, technically(to the best of my knowledge), this is the section to discuss anything, however there are a group of users that don’t like that the idea of anything goes in gossip. Others have tried to not talk about game related items before but they never end well. It always seems to end with the thread locked because of certain users with hostile tempers towards non-game related items on these forums. This has been covered before, and I find it sad that the general discussions are not really general discussions. I mean, there’s always “the water cooler” at work right?(where you can discuss anything you want.) It seems the community does not want the “water cooler”.

There was a thread that actually had a user flaming another asking why they would post such a non-game related item in the gossip portion of a game developers forum and expect anyone to replay to to it. I can’t seem to find that thread, I think the mods completely removed that thread as it caused a lot of trouble.

Perhaps a mod could clear this issue up with a distinct answer on if gossip can be non-game related?

I see many people claim this to be all game related, but I have searched up and down this forum for a definitive answer as whats ok for posting here and I have found nothing. If I am missing something(other than what the “social norms”* are for posting here), please let me know, as I like to follow UT’s rules.

If it is true that UT says no non-game related items in this forum section, then so be it.

*social norms is referring to what most users tend to post in this section regardless of what the rules define as allowable.

I think this may be the post in question. If not it’s still retarded as the thread is about a game and the reply seems to think everything on this forum has to be Unity related.

That’s not the post I was thinking of although that is a good example, and mild in comparison to the thread I remember.

There was an actual thread where someone started “yelling”(as much as you can in text) and trash talking a user for having posted something that is not Unity/game related in the gossip section. And it was more than one user that trash talked and flamed the original poster. The moderators had to step in and lock the thread and I think the thread has been fully removed. I remember some of the items I mentioned in posts for that thread but a “google site: search” returns nothing.

I feel that the general discussions is a place that anything can be discussed(except for religion and politics, as that’s in the rules) as I have not found specific rules form UT forbidding it.

I think this is an issue because nothing non-unity has rarely made an appearance and thus people think that the Gossip section is only for Unity/game related items. If I am wrong, I would love to be corrected. As far as I know, there is nothing against posting non game related items in this section of the forum. I would still like to have this issue clarified by a moderator.

Perhaps we need a sticky thread for gossip that we can reference of what is and is not allowed. I know some of the other discussion sections have them, maybe the gossip section needs one as well, just so this issue does not keep coming up.

There is zero tolerence for abusing another member, no matter what you think. Swearing or abuse has no place on a programming and game development forum. Arguments must be strictly technical based on merit too.

A lot of people here (me included) are willing to give unity money in return for an environment which will allow us to earn that money back, and further invest in unity again (asset store, upgrades).

There’s simply no room for off topic that has nothing to do with unity. Unity isn’t for kids. By kids I mean anyone with that mental age.

Hey… I agreed with this one, I miss the old days when we can get a lot of help and people sharing their UT assets (for the rest of us to learn something) in the forum. Seriously because of that i can make my first game prototype in 3 months with zero knowledge of unity.

Agreed.

Agreed.

I disagree with this. Reading the titles of all the other sections of the forum, I am unsure of what exactly it is that people are expecting from a Gossip section. So what is expected from the gossip section? From what I can tell every aspect of game development and need for help is captured well under all of the other forum sections.

Also see no rules against anything non related to Unity in this Gossip section, so where are people getting the idea that everything here must be Unity related?

There are rules for the other sections, here links to many of them:

Commercial Work
Unity Support
Unity GUI
Announcements
Collaboration
Showcase
Assets and Asset Store
Scripting
etc… etc…

Gossip is missing one of these “rule sets” and the description of the forum on the main community page is very vague about what to post. I have not seen any rules that state this section is not for “general discussions” that may or may not include unity. Again, if I am incorrect, I would love to be corrected. As far as I am aware, there are no Unity only restrictions in this section. I still request the moderators to let us know the intention for this section and create a sticky so we all know what we can and cannot post here.

Now I would like to explain why I see nothing wrong with a “true” gossip/general discussions section. Every other forum I have been a part of has had a section labeled “General Discussions” and it was in this section people were allowed to talk about whatever they like. How childish is it to want to share information with colleagues in game development, even if it doesn’t directly involve Unity? Is it childish to create friendships over these forums by discussing Unity and other interests or information? I do not see what is so wrong with allowing non-unity content in this section.

I realize that many professionals that have paid for their Unity Pro and want only professional support and discussion, but I don’t see how a single section that allows non-unity related material will destroy the atmosphere. The sections for users to invest into Unity and get help are clearly labeled, and I am not sure how general discussions is tied in to those. Can some please explain this?

Also, I have not worked a job yet where coworkers have never stopped to discuss non-work related things with each other. Why should this be so here? Perhaps I see the gossip area as a way for users to network and get to know each other without having to look at everyone’s links in their signatures(if they have their own website). To be honest the “talk almost about anything” general discussions is what I miss most from the old game engine and accompanying forums that I used to use.

To clarify this, we expect threads on all sections of the forum except Gossip to be directly relevant to Unity. We are a bit more flexible with Gossip but we do still generally expect threads to be Unity-related or of significant interest to users of Unity (ie, something to do with the creation of games or simulations, comparisons with other products, game industry events, etc). We may occasionally allow a thread about other subjects (eg, sympathy for a tragic event of world significance) but most off-topic stuff will be removed.

if you want to post something off topic with out it getting deleted then probably head over to the android development section…! nah, i am just kidding…
