Is this computer good for running Unity3D?

Hey guys I really want to get into programming and creating stuff. I don’t really no much though. Can you help me?

Is this computer good?
Do you have any suggestions? I’m looking in the $800 and below price range. I need help. thx.

It doesn’t take much these days as computers are quite powerful. As far as value goes you can get a better deal by building your own machine, however you must understand what you are doing. It isn’t that complicated but the interfaces need to all go together.

I would do something like this…

The review sites are great for getting bang for your buck. If you’re uncomfortable building your own find a reputable review site that recommends their “best” prebuilt system from whoever.

EDIT: To answer your question though that computer sort of sucks for the cost, its definitely not a ripoff, but you would still have to get a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. The video card on it is pretty weak, you generally want to spend most of your money on a powerful GPU ($150-$200) and CPU ($200), the rest just needs to be decent and you’ll have a powerful system for “cheap”. The hard drive is only 5400 rpm, the standard is at least 7200 these days.

Sure.

Note that working with unity/programming/game design doesnt have to do much with raw computer power. In fact it can sometimes be really eye-opening to have your game run on a low-budget, terrible internet connection machine.

Anyways, good luck to you. That computer is definetely a good start.

In my opinion the best setup is having two PC’s. One with a large screen and decent graphics card for dev.
Then get a second such as a laptop with a really small screen and bottom end dedicated graphics.

Regarding your question as long as it has dedicated graphics you should be ok. Although I’d stay away from brand PC’s such as HP etc. You tend to pay a lot for the ‘name’. If you build your own PC as VeraxOdium says if you put one together yourself you can get a much better PC.

As everyone pointed above, building your own PC is cheaper. If you don’t care about that option, at least don’t buy from major electronic stores such as BestBuy (FutureShop… same brand) ect., they will rip you off. You’ll get more bang for your buck in specialised Computer stores (where you can build your own computer) or online stores such as TigerDirect.

Take the time to read about hardware, it is never lost time and it will even help you understand the challenge of porting games on different platforms, supporting different specs.

Best of luck!

I can talk to u directly, cause I am working with the computer u want to buy.
I have to say it’s really fast and powerful, extremly fast and without bugs with unity and I can play pratically every game! I really recommend it, btw as other people said, your final product should be a game which can run also on a slow machines.

If u have any questions just contact me

Sorry for the extreme offtopic: Poster above me: Im loving your name + your avatar. Way to bring peace to the world of computer games!

If your target audience is multi-platform pc, it’s better not to get a pc faster than theirs!

Btw, unity runs on my netbook, which is the equivalent of a pentium 3 or something! I can totally make games with it, but they’d have to be very simplistic!

:smile::smile:

From what OP said, he needs pc to develop games on. In such case you want a machine as beefy as possible in your budget. Saying to get machine as powerful as the one you’re aiming at is silly since developing takes up much more processing power than playing. For testing you are supposed to get a different machine, not use same one for both low end testing and high end development.

If I want to develop for iphone, do I develop on one? Hell no.

I am definitely considering this option too… buying a laptop for testing my games… I built my own PC a year ago and it is a beast with Unity (when I am not running stuff in the background). I would probably buy a mid range laptop to at least get a minimum spec. here are the specs of my development machine:

Core i7 990x @3.47 Ghz OC to 3.8Ghz
12Gb DDR3 Ram @1600Mhz
nVidia GTX 570 @1.25 Gb VRAM

I think that’s why he said “If your target is a multi-platform PC” and not “If your taget is for iphone”.

Unless you plan on doing high poly modeling/sculpting, you can pretty much use anything.

Ophs, you’re right! sorry! You want a beefy computer to compile faster!

And also to playtest in editor. Could be just me but when playing in editor the performance is much worse. Like I get 50 fps standalone and yet only 30 in editor. My computer is quite bad so the 20 fps difference is quite important.

Roll your own computer. Its easy, its fun, its cheaper.

Okay thx guys.

@ cod what fps does this machine get? Say like a big project. If it got just over 30 fps I would be happy. I really don’t no much about computers :frowning: I’m going to learn a lot though. I have a team, and they all have apples. I can’t afford one. So I need a machine that has good graphics and power, to run a big RPG.

@ everyone who is saying I need to make one. I HAVE NO IDEA. lol If I could I would. If anyone could gave me advice on this I would be eternally grateful.

OFF TOPIC : I don’t know much about coding and scripting. What is scripting, sorry i’m such a newb?

I also have a laptop that I use to make little items. My main computer is about to die. So if anyone knows a better computer less than $800, please tell me it. thx for all the replies!!!

Also this computer needs a better graphics card. I’m looking for one that’s less than $150. I need help.
