is unity 4 stable enough on PC to upgrade from 3.56?

I started working on unity with version 3.2, and later another version was released which seems to throw up quite a lot of errors, and then version 3.56 was super stable.

At the moment 3.56 stays up for many hours of work without a single crash, and I don’t want to update to unity 4 if it crashes once-a-day or something like that for the moment. What is your verdict?
Is it okay to change in the middle of a project, will unity4 upgrade a basic unity 3 through project well enough to continue safely working on it with the new features?

What do you reckon for the moment? how stable is it?

On Windows Xp here

I found the Unity 4 beta version quite stable and it seemed faster to me but I generally don’t have any complex scenes.

Whether projects made in older version of unity import correctly into 4, I haven’t really tested it

In my case, Unity 3.x crashes hundreds of times more than Unity 4… I don’t even remember when Unity 4 did crash, Unity 3.5 almost everyday crashes on Mac.
I’ve also upgraded projects with big chunks of assets to Unity 4, no big problems arized for me.

I’d say do a back up of your project, install 4.0 along side your 3.5.6 and do some tests yourself. It has been quite stable my side.

With beta I got some crash bugs but with the final 4.0 all seems very stable. I also have to say, in my project, I get a little less performance with 4.0 (compared to 3.5.6) despite of the supposed improvements in the GUI and others.

PC Intel i7 - Geforce 460 GTX - 8Gb Ram - Windows 7 64 bits - Unity Pro 4.0

if I can install it alongside version 3.5.6 , then it’s worth having a go already, thanks!

Just remember to rename your unity folder to unity3.5 or something similar before installing to avoid it being overwritten.

I have been working 12 hours a day for the past week (on mac and pc) → the only thing that crashed Unity in that time was a plugin.

Unity 4 is rock solid for me. The automatic testing the Unity guys set up for builds really shows.
