few months ago, after updating my project from 5.1.3 to 5.2.x I experienced major performance degradation with UI and saw people on forums have multiple issues. Thus, I decided to downgrade back to 5.1.3.
Now, I see 5.3.x is out and many assets on Asset Store have been submitted for the newest version, so I’m missing out. Is it advisable to upgrade my project to 5.3? Are the UI bugs mostly fixed or is it yet another “early access” version like 5.2?
Also bonus, if I upgrade, what can I expect to be broken? Do shuriken particle prefabs update smoothly, etc?
It should be OK as long as you are not targeting mobile (Unity 5 not really suitable for mobile due to bugs ) or using lightmaps (Enlighten is a bugfest). Some things are running better (UI) seems to be less buggy. Best bet is to back up your project. Change your install directory name of Unity 5.1.3 to to Unity5.1.3 then install 5.3. (Which will overwrite The Unity directory).
Then at least you will have 2 versions and you can compare framerates etc. DO NOT upgrade your project without backing it up
Meh, going deeper in 5.4 I take back what I recommend, it’s way too buggy and has tons of regression with navmesh and particles – well if you don’t use those you should be fine.
Hmm, I do use a lot of particles, both standard and Particle Playground ones. That sounds fishy, thanks for heads up. Will wait until someone makes performance comparisons, just to be safe.
I don’t know how it was before 4.x with patching, but I have a feeling they are giving unfinished engine to people to do the QA instead of hiring people to do that. They are too much invested in providing more services instead of stability. Well, thats the gist of what I saw. Might be wrong tho, as the changes they implement could benefit in the long run.
He just sort of declares it stable. http://gfycat.com/AnotherAdorableBunny
It kind of worries me that they think 5.3.4 is “fully stable”. It also kind of worries me that they didn’t say how they were going to address quality issues other than letting free users access the beta to get more bug reports. But they already have plenty of bugs to keep them busy.
There are problems with 5.3.4. While performance seems to be better on Windows, Mac and ios appear to have problems. There is a discussion in the Announcement 5.3 thread. The most stable 5.x iOS version seems to be 5.1.2 or 3. I’ve downgraded once again.
Yeah, I had a similar experience. I’ve downloaded and upgraded my project to 5.3.4 on a different machine, turns out it wasn’t a mess to upgrade existing assets. I’ve only had to upgrade TextMesh Pro to version 5.2+ in order to properly run. But then again, I lost all font data on all texts in scenes and prefabs, so I have to manually link again. Some textures were broken on certain 3d models. All in all, nothing that a few hours of fixing can’t solve.
Also, on my old MBP Early 2011 (has version 5.1.3f) I have consistent 100+ fps in editor mode, whereas the same scene on G75VW, which has far more better graphics card, runs at 55-65fps, with occasional spikes to 40-45.
That was mostly on first glance. Will do a more thorough analysis with profiler, but as it stands, it is still not worth upgrading existing projects up to newer versions.
