Hi. I’m new to using Unity and I want to make a 3D fan game based off the anime, Violet Evergarden (I’m kind of a weeaboo.) Anyways, like the title suggests, I was wondering if Unity would be a good engine for a 3D free roam game (please note, I plan on adding A LOT of things other than free roam i.e. a really big map, npc’s, quests, etc.) Is unity good for graphics if I wanted to add Weather and water? Also, Can I add music to it? Thanks!
You can do all of these things in Unity, but these are questions that convey pretty clearly that you’re a beginner, so before you start with something this particularly ambitions, I really recommend going though the following:
- Using the Unity Interface - Unity Learn
- John Lemon's Haunted Jaunt: 3D Beginner - Unity Learn
- Create with Code - Unity Learn
I realize the length of the last one there is a little on the daunting side, but it’ll also give you the skills you need to adapt to the problems you’ll experience as a new developer.

To be clear though, Unity is a professional level tool for creating games. It is not one of those very fast tools which holds your hand and has quick one size fits all functionality baked in to quickly throw something together.
What you describe is probably years of work for a single person who already is familiar with Unity, Blender, and C#. Though if you bought pre-made assets you can speed up the process a bit if you know what you’re doing.
That’s an interesting fan game to do
Thank You!! This helps a lot.
Thanks. I realize that this might take a while. But, to be honest, that’s ok. Most fan games start out like that, right? (Let alone games in general XD)
Thank you.
How difficult they are to start isn’t the important thing to keep in mind in my opinion. What’s important to keep in mind is that most of them end with a DMCA takedown after the initial release and publicity if they have the actual characters or any other content that can be identified from the actual series.
If you want to see some examples of this just go on your favorite search engine and look for “fan game takedown”.
Just call it Purple Alwaysharvest, problem solved.

So, just rename the game. Got it XD
You also need alot of patience, most projects ebb away into nothingness. Also if you have kids and partner, make sure he/she is willing to take all work with the kids.
Thanks for the advice. Also, I am the kid (I’m an ambitious Weeb)
Yes, I’m thinking of creating a game that has a procedurally generated universe, and procedural NPCs, with a universe size that is currently unprecedented, where you can craft and gather provisions, all with a fantastic visual style.
I’m gonna call it:
No man’s …
don’t do it it’s a trap!
NO man’s frontier elite noctis
Why are you doing my game!
